OK here is the number on the axle seals. NAK TA 14y 34 50 95 4

Those numbers are printed on the rubber itself around the outside edge of the rubber but inside the steel ring. I have both of those seals left in the box and only one of the much larger one piece rubber seals. THey must of used one of those but I don't know what that seal is for. Looks like just about half of all the parts in the box are gone. I basically have a half set of everything left except the trunion bearings and I have still have all four of those because when he asked if he should button it up I said yes as I needed it in about 30 minutes.

Hmmm, I will have to look tomorrow when I am out there...

So he rebuilt both knuckle right?

The larger all rubber peice is a wiper seal, should be installed unless you got an oddball kit with 3 of them (but once again, I have never seen that happen either).

No trunnion bearings installed? Did he pull the knuckles off on both sides, or just the spindle off? This may explain the inner axle seals not being installed, it is a bit harder to do if he left the knuckles on... but I don't know how he would have replaced any of the wiper seals or felt if that is the case...

Probably wouldn't send any freinds to this mechanic ;)

Yow.

No he just did one side. Thats all I asked him to do and he offered to do the trunion bearings but I said I needed it so he buttoned it up. Part of the problem is the time frame I gave. I dropped it off on thursday at noon and picked it up Friday at noon. I gave them a box of parts and some scribbled instructions of what I needed done. I think he pulled the flange the caliper and the ten backside bolts and pulled the whole thing off in one piece axle and all. Then popped out the axle the birf installed the new birf popped the axle into the birf and slid it back in. Thats the description I gave him of how to do it. I may not send any toyota birf jobs his way but all the other work I've seen and heard from them has been great as are the prices and turn around time. I'm used to oddball vehicles an mechanics screwing things up. I once had a mechanic time my scout on the number 1 cylinder instead of number 8 and after the backfire blew my muffler into about 5 pieces when I test drove it I remembered to tell him this isn't like a chevy. Pretty rural here. Unless you go to the dealer its hard to find a guy who specializes in a specific vehicle.

The large seal I only had one of that I was curious about was like an axle seal but much larger but basically a metal ring with rubber inside but not a wiper seal. I never asked for a knuckle rebuild I just wanted the birf installed so I could spend the one day I had off in between Thanksgiving and Christmas doing something fun with my wife and boys. Thats why I'm not really pissed at the guy because he made that happen for me and that alone was worth the money I paid. If this thing blows into a thousand pieces tomorrow it got me a day with my kids and that is worth it.

Hang on to everything you have left, when you get time to do the re-build on both sides, I am sure I can fit you with the rest of the kit for cheap. I would recomend you fix the lube issue ASAP, and with the other half of the knuckle rebuild kit you have, you should be able to do the entire knuckle easily... Good luck :D

Kurt you're great. Thanks for all the answers to questions on the phone and the time you've taken to help out a LC newb. Your prices were the best as has been your service. Shoot me a price on loaded thirds with 5.29's for this thing. All I can see is the coming soon on your website.

The larger metal/rubber seal is the wheel bearing inner grease seal, so your wheel bearings may need a look as well at some point. I see what/why this was done and agree with the priority on family time. You never get that back, so spend it wisely.

Well that must have gotten replaced because I only have one left. I'll get this sorted out. My Dad is Dying of cancer right now and is in the last stages. I spent today with him and am taking the week off work to help mom out and try to be around as much as I can these last few days. Really puts it all in prespective. He's had it for a year but the reality of it all is setting in. I hope it comes fast as he is so weak I nearly have to carry him around. A former 220 pd college football player a and 79 year old WWII vet now weighs 140 pds. I don't know why I"m sharing but maybye you can understand why this has lost its impending significance.

An even wiser way to spend your time, I see. I'm sorry to hear you are losing your Father, bro. Be sure you tell him you love him, and WHY you love him at any times you get the chance. Nothing means more to us Dads than to know our Son loved us despite all the discipline we had to instill. Nothing. Assure him you'll take care of Mom and any other thing you can think of that's on his mind.

I'll say a prayer for you, for your family, and very specifically for your father that things be peaceful and come together right. Sharing on this board is the glue that binds, and you're being thought of right now.

Warm Regards,

DougM

Thanks Doug. Man I'm teary, it means alot. I've got four boys of my own and my biggest concern is there well being. I'm the youngest of 13 so we've assured dad that mom will be fine. I've got plans to build a house and sell the one I'm in. I'm building an extra room on for Mom and I've told him that. He is worried if he's done enough and a life dedicated to Country, Family, Community and God should be enough. Taught school and coached for 30 years and has always been there for anyone in need. I'm a proud son but it is selfish for me to want him to stay. I'm sure there are plenty of old friends waiting to greet him on the other side. Hope I can say the same when I'm there as well. Anyway thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Same for you. Be safe.

How it reads to me is that you paid for a Birf replacement not a one side axle rebuild to me. $112 only covers about 1.5-2 hrs labor and though it may be a strech to charge 2 hrs (maybe flat rate time) to replace the birf and inner seal. What is the shop rate? It may have been done this way as to your and his time constraints. A full conversation will be a good thing to have. Now the grease and oil thing is not right and needs to be fixed. Good luck with this and your father. later robbie

Just wanted to follow-up,

That is the exact seal you should have 34-50-95 which I beleive translates to a 34mm ID, 50mm OD, 9.5mm wide...

:D
