I have an early 70's era KitchenAid K5-A benchtop mixer, with the old governor-style speed controller, made by Hobart, I love that thing. Got it cheap on craigslist, as it was noisy when running. It just needed re-greasing inside.
We also have a few of the 600 "Professional" mixers in the baking teaching kitchen, I've already had to replace a few parts that have worn out (planetary in the mixing heads), and one shredded it's worm gear shortly after we bought it. We called KitchenAid since it was still under warranty, and they said "well it's really not intended for kneading bread dough". Really? Then why is there a dough hook in the box? They sent us a new one. The newer ones are much easier to work on, but they are not made as well.
We have a K5SS that just broke the other day, the bowl won't lift anymore. Gotta order the parts.
My favorite to use is the huge floor-standing Hobart.
