There is no right answer on this but I’d like to hear the pros vs cons

Kid is turning 16. I can give her our 2016 LC with 125k miles or swap it for a newer 4runner at basically an even trade

My thought:
I’ve had the lc since 2016 and it’s been dealer maintained/ good condition. I’m assuming the Lc depreciates less over the next 5 yrs than a new 4Runner. It’s already 8yrs old so less worry about door dings….. I already own it

What do you think?

LC All day. Plus it stays in the family so when and if she gets sick of the old tech and wants to upgrade you get it back.

Ain’t nobody around here gonna tell you to make the move from a 200 to a 4Runner
Yea I figured. But at least I can tell my wife everyone agrees with me. These are the only two options in my book.

My first born was backing my 200 out of the driveway when he was 16 and ever so slightly kissed the tree behind him, no damage at all, but I saw it and the look on his face......

I bought him a 2008 4Runner when he got his license at 17, - 2 months later, he hydroplaned and it was totaled

We got the insurance payout and upgraded it to a 2011 4Runner Trail

The 200 is mine -

I would do the 200.
Now if you want to go into weeds analyzing, you will get to the conclusion that both your options are bad options. But since you mentioned that these are the only options for your family...
There is no even trade in my book between a 200 and a 4R. Maybe the price is even everything else is not. I grew up dreaming of owning a Hilux; ended up owning an LX after experiencing both.
The only argument in my book for the 4R is not spoiling your kid and creating expectations that all her future cars will be at LX standard.

Question: if she gets the LC what do you get as replacement?
I drive a dodge diesel and a wrangler. The Lc is the wife’s old car.
So I debate this: is an 8yr old “luxury” car the lc. “Nicer” than a newer 4r.

Btw I know this all personal opinion. I probably should have put a couple polls out there for these questions. To the earlier point, I think it will be fun to have the LC around so I can slowly mod it, for her of course-:)

The bigger, heavier car will have the safety advantage. I say stick with the cruiser.
So I debate this as well is bigger heavier better than 8yrs of safety improvements and slightly smaller.

Ok seriously, Any difference in insurance ?

It depends on the "nicer" definition. This is a very subjective word to use. What's nicer for you, your wife, or us may not be at all what's nice for your kid.
If you want to make the "right" decision I'll start with her, not with wife or us.
My perfect car for my kid back int eh day was a Volvo wagon. So, we went out and test drove a few of them from different generations. That was Ok but not fully satisfying. So, we test drove more, including a Mini Cooper, a few Subaru's. Eventually we tested an old 2008 Subaru Outback. I do not know exactly why but that was it. Not my first choice but it does not matter what my choice is.
We parents know a lot about our kids, but we do not know everything.

Umm neither. Have her work and save up enough money to buy a $3,000 Toyota Corolla with you matching half.

This^^^

She will appreciate the privilege of driving much more if she contributes to it, and much more likely to be responsible with the vehicle she is driving.

If you’re dead set on the two. Absolutely keep the 200. Mass wins in collisions and she is much more safe in the beast.
