I would like to get a second master key programmed for my 2000 and need to know if I buy a new uncut "shell" can I use the electronics inside an old key from my 1999 and then reprogam it. Will this work?

It sounds workable if you follow the steps on some of the posts for unprogramming and reprogramming. Contact Cruiser Dan at American Toyota and he can fix you up with a solution - even using a Camry key depending on your need.

No need to reprogram. Just swap the innards into the new shell and have a locksmith cut the blade. Works like a champ. Stronger than the original too.

Thanks for your replies but the original question was getting a new shell with the electronics from ANOTHER cruiser NOT the one getting programmed. I have an extra key from a 99 and wanted to get new shell cut for my 2000. Been out of town for a while just now getting back to this. Note I have a master for the 2000 to program from.

yes, you can reprogram the guts from the 99 to work with the 2000 model
the only problem I have had with the aftermarket shell is they are not as thick and strong as the OEM

we have 2 of the OEM ones that broke already (the plastic shell).....
gotta admit, that's pretty lame for a $60K vehicle, plus the dealer was completely unwilling to replace them under warranty...

Eric...we agree on that...it IS a lame key design for any vehicle much less a $50-$60K LC. I haven't looked at the other Toyota model remote keys...wonder if they are designed any better/more durable? And if so I wonder if, like the Camry solid key I have and use (now...thanks CDan for that tip!!!), they could be programmed for the LC?

I need a complete uncut key with the chip and all, as I would like to have a spare without having to pay $400 for it.

Coming to think of it: Maybe a remote without a key could be handy in addition, for the kids to get into the car, but not take off with it.... Or could be used together w the valet key.
