I need some advice on cooling fan options for a '77 FJ55. I'll try to keep this short n sweet.

My setup is a '77 PIG with '84 FJ60 2F installed. Fan clutch on FJ60 motor only leaves 1 cm or less gap between fan blades and radiator.

I know there is another person out there with a FJ60 2f in their pig.

I need a fan or option that will allow for enough clearance between fan and radiator.

I have old clutchless FJ55 fan and pulley however fan only has 4 of 6 blades so I'd rather not use it.

I recently picked up one of those slim 2 fan electric fans from a Ford Contour . It fits pretty damn nice on the FJ55 radiator however some simple mods will be necessary to mount it. I still am not 100% certain that it will clear all the pulleys when mounted. I've been told at 50% it will draw 10amps and pull 2300 CFM. 100% power draws 34amps and pulls 3400CFM. I believe it initially likes 100amp draw to start the fan but there are options to help with that. To run this setup I will need a better alternator and $100-$150 worth of switches and relays. Oh and magical wiring knowledge...or any wiring knowledge for that matter.

Cost is a factor for me however I do enjoy the junk yard.

I love to hear suggestions of what worked or didn't work. I'd also like advice on junkyard vehicles with a alternator that might suit my needs.

Thanks!

Howdy! I would look at swapping in a later model fj40/55 pump & clutch fan shroud setup. Should bolt right up on th 2F. IMHO, a mechanical fan will cool much better than most electric units, although some of those seem to work OK. John

Do you know what years the 55 or 40 came with a fan clutch? If I ever hit water I'm kinda not too excited by what might happen to the old fan w/o clutch. I do have my old H2O pump and fan but there wasn't a clutch on that setup.

Just to note I've never had cooling problems with my ride until the fan ate my radiator. Thats including running the old setup with shroud and the fan that only had 4 of 6 blades.

The new setup (FJ60 fan/motor) I couldn't get a shroud on but it never heated up.

It seems like the electric fan setups work pretty well for guys down in Texas and Florida so I think it is a option for me up in the great white north. The downside is wiring and alternator issues can make it expensive for me.

Thanks inkpot!
