interesting, there was just a thread on whether these arms are strong enough or not....

know what caused the bending?

eh, nice 80 in front of your shop! Best colors too... :)

Sorry everyone,

I either misunderstood or the customer had a change of heart.

While Eric, (sdnative), was looking at the bumper, (I was not at the shop), the customer called.
It is bumper only for sale, no holders, no tire mount. No where near the deal I thought it was, especially considering the bent stub axle pivot. By the way, he bent it while backing up with a trailer attached and the swing arm open. Jackknife and voila.

I'll speak with the customer in the morning when I'm back in the office and see if that price can be slashed to make it more appealing.

Trying to help a customer, trying to help fellow Cruiser lovers and see what happens :whoops:

;) Yep, but it wont be for a while. I need to clean up the bumper and fix the pivot first.

Luckily I'm getting pretty good at changing those springs out.

Well, I finally got a chance to spend some time with the bumper. I took off all the bolt on stuff, and washed it down realy good.

Here are some pics of the damaged areas. I'll post more as I begin to repair it. I have a inquiry into man-a-fre about the posibility of getting a spare pivot off a damaged bumper.

Hope these pics help with your concerns Eric.

The damage doesn't look too bad, and seems to be limited to the pivot and the cross bar of the swingout.

That bend in the swingout is the way it's built (right?)

To bend the pivot that way, it probably took a hit from the bottom up while it was open. Almost like the driver backed into something with the tire unlocked/open.

I think you could cut the old one out and take it to any reputable machine shop / machinist and they could make you one just like it.

Then (with new bearings) you might be able to bolt the swingout right back on.

Yes, the damage happened when the owner backed into something with the swingout latched open.

I thought the bend in the swingout next to where it mounts on the pivot was from the mishap. Can someone clarify? Does the swingout have that divot in it? The machine shops recommendation is to just replace the entire horizontal piece of the swingout and re-weld on the connected pieces, but we were assuming that divot was "damage".

A new pivot should be really easy to weld on providing I can get an original kaymar piece. If not, the machine shop should be able to turn one on a lathe.

My last resort is to pick up a spindle/hub from a trailer shop and adapt it to work. I really want to use the original kaymar stuff in case I ever wanted to use a different swingout there, it would just bolt right on.

Also, can someone clarify, does this bumper just bolt on right over the existing "bumper" (cross member), or do I need to remove the existing one first? From everything I've read, it's about a 2 hour job and no mention of cutting anything.

wow, amazing, I had assumed the spindle "attachment" would be bent, but it's the spindle itself....

no, no need to cut the cross-member for the Kaymar 80

that bend in the arm with the dimple is normal.

have you thought about forgetting about that spindle, sell the swingout and get one for the other side (or trade it)?
