Hi all. Ive been a forum lurker for about 2 years, and Im finally getting around to enjoying my FJ40 more.

I have a 1977 FJ40 with the original motor and tranny. It has a hell for stout lift and 35" BFG MTs, roof rack, ARB bumper, snorkel, and a 9,500 pound powerplant warn winch.

Last week while at the Lake of the Ozarks I took the 40 on some of the utility access trails, not very challenging, but still fun. Has anyone else explored the access trails around the Zarks?

I took it out to Kansas Rocks on Saturday with my 5 year old son and a buddy and had a great time. We mainly did green trails, but tackled a few blues as well. Some of the blacks looked incredibly challenging!

I quickly figured out that adding power steering is a must! I also think a locker will be in the future.

What lockers do you guys run on your 40s?

When does the club get together? Id like to join the club and get together with some of the local people for some wheeling!

Welcome, Locker choice is varied most of us are using ARB, Lockright, or Aussi lockers in our 40's or 60/62's. Our next club get together is the annual meeting usually near the first of February. If you would like to join before then PM me you email and I can send you the membership form.

I like the ARB because you can control the locker. I drive the 40 on streets so ARB might be the way to go.

Ive hear that lockers on ice and snow can be a bit scarey!

When I was at Kansas Rocks last weekend another 40 owner said putting front lockers on the stock front axle isnt possible. Im far from a mechanic, but this seems odd to me. Any thoughts?

The other 40 owner didn't know what he was talking about. He might have been suggesting to not go with a full-time locker in the front without beefing up the axles and bifields. He may also have been looking at the fact you don't have power steering. But a locker is very possible.

My old 40 had stock axles, a lockrite in the rear, and an ARB in the front. I broke one birf in 11 years. Probably more luck than anything.

I've got a lockright in the rear, open up front. Drive it in the street just as much as the trail. It's defiantly different, but once you learn how to drive with it it's no big deal, IMO. Some guys hate em. I also drive mine in the snow with it, just keep you foot out of the skinny pedal in turns.

With that said, if money was no object, I'd love an ARB in the rear.

What is this ARB we speak of? A Ripe Banana!

You don't have to take it . . . just say "no."
