For many years I would set up my tent when camping. On a trip last year, this old tent sat in a long overnight rain and water entered the tent. Time for something new!

Upon a recommendation, I purchased a Kamp Rite tent cot (the oversize version).

After 3 camping trips, Im impressed! I can set up in rocks; no longer have to find a smooth area like I did for the old tent.
If it rains hard and water is running or sitting on the ground, the cot sits above it. It comes with a rainfly too.
Other things that are nice is that all four sides can zip open or open with a mesh for airflow.
The cot itself is very comfortable and there are no bars that cross under your back.
It takes about 3 minutes to set up and folds to a 34x34x8 which is very manageable. Its nice after a long day of wheeling not to have the hassle of setting up sleeping quarters ~

Thought I would share...

I think I'm going to get one, for all the reasons you mentioned. I've struggled with the size, ( wish it folded up smaller somehow ) but I guess just live with it.

I've been wanting one of these to mount on top of my 40's expedition rack, but need it in a 2-3 person size. How many sizes do they offer and from your experience, would you recommend them for that application, or are they better suited for the ground? Thanks.

I have no personal experience with these but I'd much prefer the model with 4 legs over the 2.

They make one in a double. Here are the choices

Thank you. I actually stumbled upon these today at my local Ace Hardware store. They have them in a cooperative effort with Bass Pro shops. $199 for the Oversized, and $299 for the Double. They placed an order last week for both. They'll be in next week and I'll get a chance to see what works best before I buy. (I'm a little concerned about the rain fly.) But, not bad, when you figure what they want for an expedition topper tent! I'll let you know how it turns out.

not that it matters much for SoCal and Baja, but I wonder how you deal with these cot tents in a heavy rain, getting in and out, changing, staying dry etc... something to be said for a bigger tent...

I dont dissagree with that ~ living in AZ, its not much of an issue. I can deal with the occasional rain or sprinkle rather easily.

I store my shoes directly under the cot anyway which would keep them dry; in a tupperware container if standing water is possible. Worst case, I could also rig up a rainfly from the trucks roofrack over the cot to help keep a dry area to work in if need be.

I grew up in the PNW and IMHO a small tent and separate fly are better than a big tent. Tents get claustrophobic real fast when the rain last more than a few hours.

I have the older model. I have only got to use it once but really enjoyed it.

Just pick up one for $80 , its the XL size. I could not pass it up at that price... I cant believe how easy it is to set up and take down. I am very impressed with the comfort of the cot it self.. Looks like I will be sleeping in it at GSMTR instead of the truck this time.

that IS a good price! Congrats ~

can you readily leave a sleeping bag in there while folded?
and for the older (non-dome) double, does the long bar in the middle make it impossible to lay there ?

not sure about leaving a sleeping bag in there while folded up. i bought a cot sized air mattress to sleep on. others have used thermarest pads. as long as you use one of the two you should have no issues with the cross bars.

The consensus with these cot tents and the reason why I never purchased one is the condensation buildup.

Ive learned that this will happen in most any small area like the back of your truck or a regular tent - I think it has something to do with being a heavy mouth-breather :D

If the unit is left sealed up and not vented this will happen. There are two small vents on the top sides of the tent cot that if left open, will prevent this from occuring. If the night temp wont get too awful cold, Ill leave one of the ends cracked open and just the screen closed.

Even in inclement weather, the rainfly will cover these vents but still allow it to breathe.

Coleman makes a cheap tent fan. A magnet goes on top outside the tent. The fan stays inside and magnetically attaches to the base. Would be perfect for moving the air. I have one but have not tried it.

Hi all,

A 'wheeling buddy of mine has used a Tent Cot for several years now, across the western USA (WA, OR, CA, UT, & NV.)

He keeps his sleeping pad & bag in the Tent Cot. Sleeps in all types of weather.

I borrowed it for one trip to try out. A bit too "closed-in" for my tastes, and bulky to carry when folded. Also, challenging when the dog is along (& sleeping with you!)

To each his own! ;)
