May have just lost reverse gear on my '88 FJ62. Has about 288k miles so she's done me well. Anyone have any quick diagnostic thoughts that I could try? Below is what I've checked.

Trans fluid checks good. When I shift it into reverse, it feels like it engages but slowly moves in reverse. Basically no torque in reverse. Feels pretty weak. No more clunk into reverse which is good, but definitely not how it should be. All forward gears work. About to check shift linkage adjustment.

Always said I'd run the original set-up until it crapped out. May have to go A440 to H55 or what I've always wanted - a LS 5.3/ 6L80 repower.

If you have the $ and time, do the drive train change to LS. Sell the 3FE. Most go with 4L60E. There is a great thread here on Mud that discusses LS aspects.

Tried the Rodney flush today and no joy. Looks like an LS repower is in my future. I've read the LS swap forums here and think I could do it. Might take me a year though. It's time I don't have!
