Just picked up a 87 4wd 22re with factory turbo, 140,000 on the clock all in all a pretty clean truck that for the most part runs great. So far the only problem has been that the truck will stumble occasionally at random speeds and at random throttle positions. Some times it will do it when I'm on the throttle pretty good and getting in the turbo, or just gingerly accelerating at cruising speeds or say I've just crested a small rise in the road and back off the throttle it might stumble then. The PO replaced the throttle positioning sensor just before I bought it and today I replaced the fuel filter and the pcv valve to no avail. I have read that after market tps's are not always correct so I might try and find a working oem. I also thought about changing the O2 sensor. The only thing that I have noticed is that the truck seems to run a little cool, maybe like the thermostat is stuck open, but the radiator stays pretty warm long after the truck has been parked. Could the truck be running too cool? Just looking for a little insight. Thanks in advance.

Dang I was hoping it wasn't anything major, the PO said it was code 11.

Cool! The factory turbo trucks are neat. I would def say you should check into it a bit more before you just start throwing parts at it. Is the coolant low in the radiator? And I would recommend you replace the tps with a factory one. That seems to be a cause of a lot of different issues on Toyotas. I can price a new one for you tomorrow of you want.

Yeah sure, I didn't think you could still get new ones from Toyota.

Yeah it's a 5 speed. Thanks for the heads up that's good to know.

if you end up throwing a new tps in...make sure you realize it needs to be calibrated after install...
not just a bolt on part.

you will need a good voltmeter to read resistances to calibrate it.
its all in the fsm..

Is it a 5-speed? If so, those R151F trannies are worth a small fortune now.

TRUE STORY. I was thinking about getting one for my mini until I saw the price... Ended up getting a W56 with 2 transfer cases for way less than what one of those costs.

The TPS is $96.82 with the MUD discount. The warehouse has plenty in stock. Shoot me a PM or email if you want to order one.

I might just do that, do any of you all think the o2 sensor might be the culprit? I'm thinking of changing it before I fool withe tps anymore.

calibrate TPS before you do ANYTHING!...older toyotas will run completely differnt with a properly setup tps. they will run "fine" with it off a little. break out a timing light too and just check timing for good measure

Thanks for the info,I'm going to get the tps looked at next week. Here are a few pics

Nice truck. Been looking for one like that for a while. Thats my favorite body style.

Thanks! So I had the tps and the timing checked and both were ok. I replaced the fuel filter and the pcv valve and the occasional miss has gotten better. The miss used to be more at acceleration, slight or heavy but not all the time. Now it seems to be more at decel. Say you cruising at 55-60 and crest a hill and back off the throttle it will stumble usually just once. If you give it gas or let totally off it will go right away. It will still occasionally do it upon acceleration. Any one have any more thoughts as to what is causing this? I am thinking of changing the o2 sensor but wanted to get a few more opinions before I did so.

Thanks, I will definitely change them. I wonder if the 22ret takes the same cap and rotor as the 22re?
