I know we had scheduled a trip through Slick Rock/Deer Valley/Strawberry for the end of June but I'm looking at the mountains right now and it looks like it's still snowing up there to me.

I just wanted to throw out a High Rock Canyon run as an alternative while people still had time to make plans.

I propose a trip that starts at Gerlach early Saturday morning then takes us North with stops at Leadville and the Petrified Forest. From there we continue north to Grass Valley Ranch Road. We follow Grass Valley ranch Road to High Rock Canyon. This brings us into the canyon south of Stevens Camp near what I believe is Gold Canyon. We should have plenty of time for a pleasurable drive through High Rock Canyon ending at Soldier Meadows Hot Springs. We may even have time to find the High Rock Sink Hole.

Soldier Meadows Hot springs has a few different camp options some with really nice "hot tubs" located nearby.

Day two could be a return trip to Reno or a trek across the Plya depending on what the group or individuals decide.

Just throwing it out there for discussion.

FWIW: I know a few of the :princess:, mine included, are a little happier not tenting it. Jim and Kathy, the relative (5-years-ish now) new owners of Soldier Meadows Ranch have done a nice job of cleaning and refreshing the guest house portion. They have an ala carte menu set up: You can just camp on their property; you can add a shower (or just shower without camping); you can do dinner and/or breakfast; and of course stay overnight in the "bunk house".

They have memory foam mattresses on all their guest beds now! And the bathrooms and showers are clean and nice.

What date are we looking at here?

Anybody got a website or phone number for the Ranch?

Here you go. While I haven't stayed there, it is a really neat place.

I was just throwing out an alternative to the original Slick Rock/Deer Valley/Strawberry trip since that really doesn't look feasible given the snow pack up there. Dates would likely be set at the meeting on the 14th or based on this thread.

Look who's getting SOFT!!!:princess::flipoff2:

I would definitely steer you AWAY from any playa crossing until these storms are distant memories.

Better soft than not at all :flipoff2:

I make no apologies for cush camping :D. And blaming it on :princess: keeps me above water. Er used to :grinpimp:

Good advice, it looked like things were drying out when I made the OP. So much for that:rolleyes:

Nice try on the diversion tactic

From the looks of things, June may be pushing anything up in higher elevations. I don't mind going to the playa, but I'd have to see how much it rained the last couple days before I could commit to a "Mudding" trip. I think the Ranch looks awesome, now I just have to get the date and see if we can make it.

Most of the big snow is above 8000'. I think we will be fine for end of June thru the Deer Valley-- don't know about the other trails--haven't been over them.

The High Rock trip sounds good as well. Weren't we planning on both?

High Rock was suggested but we didn't set anything definite.

I think Slick Rock is lower, I know you are looking down at Kirkwood from the top of the first hill on Strawberry.

As of last week, there were two trucks buried in the tracks on the Playa in different locations.

I think High rock is clear though.

I posted that because earlier in the thread there was talk of the Playa. It was an affirmation to stay off the Playa as mentioned...

I'm sure High Rock is clear.

The good news is that with the temps we are supposed to be getting in the next couple of weeks, the playa should be driveable soon. It dries very fast.

We officially change the run for June to this trip.

I'm going to throw out Brunos in Gerlach as a meet location with a 9:00AM leave time.

Maybe we could get a list of people who want to attend going?
Please post up if you plan to go.
