Old school. Wonder if these could actually be cleaned up and safely be used for diesel....? Or good as antique garbage only?

GTSS...I have an old metal one you can have for free if you want to try and clean it up and restore it. No idea of history as I got it out of someones back yard.

Thanks PeeZed! I'll look into it a bit and see if people still use these old cans successfully. Will let you know.

Did you figure this out? My uncle had some of these, put different sized ball bearings inside and shake it like a mad man, this will knock off all the rust inside. Then you can get a fuel tank liner that you pour inside and make sure it coats everything. Then they are good to go! A little sand blast on the outside and they will look good as new!

I didn't end up buying them, but I like your procedure for renewing them. The ones I linked to sold, but I'll keep my eye out for another to play around with. Thanks for the heads up!

If u need one .. I have one

Just an FYI they have brand new ones at princess auto

Yeah I know. I like the new plastic Scepter ones they have. Just being cheap is all.

Thanks man, but I'm good. I have a couple of the Canadian Tire 20L yellow ones, and they work ok for my needs (if not as cool as the military spec Scepter ones).

I just thought the old steel ones were sort of cool looking and would be neat to revive a couple. Clearly not worth the effort though.

If you are ever in kelowna there is a military surplus store there that has good deals on them. I got mine there, they are the standard swiss military issued metal ones

Cool! Good to know. Might be out there this winter.

just scored this at the flea market and it is rust free on the inside. Bought a new gasket and to be safe, I cleaned out the can with warm water and soap . When i was shaking it around , a little water dripped from the cap. I didnt have the cap on there too tight though.

I'm a total noob with gas cans and always had the plastic ones. Is this normal? I was hoping to take it on a weekend trip and have it strapped down on its side on my conferr rack with the cap near the top.
So , Do i need to wrench down on the cap to make sure it doesnt vent or leak? Or do I just put in three gallons so it doesnt leak onto the roof?

Any help with this would greatly be appreciated. Hoping to hit up the back roads in Big sur!
thanks
