Will a JDM winch head from a 70 series mount onto an old FJ40?
I know it wont be straight bolt on but is the head itself compatible?

Yes, if you are using the older version of the winch head (change was in 1990).
There are very few changes (perhaps none) in the old PTO design from year to year.
