I have an 2011 Outback... its a great DD but it can't be compared to a Landcruiser even on simple gravel roads .
If you are hauling kids the diesel 80 series is a good option or gas 100 series (but, 100 gives you no hedge when these low fuel prices increase).
Maybe you should try to import JDM diesel 100 with an 1HDFTE.
Although it has IFS should not be an issues for your description of intended uses.
The 70 series are too small to haul kids any distance and way sort on basic comforts - backseat is for midgets.
I have an 95 HDJ now and used you have an 89 BJ74 for 9 years.
