The point is, only N.America got the 2UZ from the start. Ditto w/ the 4L V6 in the 4runner. That engine didn't migrate over to overseas Prados until a couple years into the new body style. It's evident Toyota is using the US market (where people buy on HP numbers) to test new engines before committing them to overseas markets, where reliability is more important.

That is not accurate. The 4.0L 1GR-FE was introduced on the Land Cruiser Prado in 2003; the same year it was introduced in the US. In fact, I think the Prado120 was introduced before the 4Runner in 2003 so Europe might have gotten the 4.0 a few months earlier.

The real reason the 5.7L might not be on the Japanese version is because it would be an imported powerplant and/or other manufacturing/assembly/regulation reasons. If/when they make the 5.7 in JPN, they may offer it there. Just another possible explaination...

I think Down Under, the 1FZ and TD were the only two engines available on both live axle and IFS versions for the first few years. Afterwards, the IFS got the 2UZ at least as an option. The live axle international spec version (105) only had the 1HZ or 1FZ engines available.

The TD in the 100 is the 1HD-FTE, the 1HZ is a non turbo of the same displacement which was offered in the 105.

The aussies may have also had a 100 with the 1HZ, one of them should chime in and let us know.

The 5.7L is available in the JDM, but on the LX-570 (and not on the LCr, as you correctly point out). FWIW, the Oz spec LX-570 also gets the 3UR. The question of where these engines are coming from is still up for debate.

I've never been able to pin down any reliable reference that indicates there is a Japanese plant, though I have seen it reported in the auto mags that there is (they have been wrong before...)

Cheers, R -

that's good to know Ron. Sounds like the marketing decision then.
either way, the concept that the USA is a test bed before engines go elsewhere is not accurate.

I wonder, as you do, where the 3UR is made... certainly our in house 200 series owner could look at the VIN tags and engine tags and maybe get to the bottom of that?

Yep, but we'll get it sorted eventually. As someone else astutely pointed out, not all of the 3UR's will be created equally. IOW, The Tundra motor will not have the exact same specs at the Cruiser vers, nor perhaps the same as as the LX vers.

My gut tells me the Alabama produced engines are not going to Araco for installation in the Cruisers... but I've had a real belly-ache down there before, so who knows ;)

Well, according to Toyota U.S.A. The 2008 USA Land Cruiser/Tundra/Sequioa ALL have the exact same spec'd engine and transmission.

They are all rated at 381/401/same six speed same RPM etc. Its possible that they new 5.7 is not SAE certified which give the same numbers across the board.
