Does any body have any experience with these? Are they reliable? Are they the same as the stock motors? Do they have the same power or are they detuned? Any info would be appriciated.

These engines are reliable... Just make sure whoever you are buying tehse engines from is running compression test and so on...... What kind of an engine are you looking for???

JDM- ?

I will tell you to look all over the web. Lots of claims made by importers after your dollars! Anyone claiming 40,000. mile or below motors aint on the up and up. Same as here millage is all over the place. The deal is Japanese law requires strict emisions testing. If the motor dont make it then its cheaper for them to replace the vehicle. So it all comes down to how it was maintained.. If you are mechanical enough to swap motors, find a good machine shop locally. With a good warranty and let em rebuild what ya have. Here in my home town there is a great shop that will give me a year or 10,000 mile warranty for 1400.00 to do a 22re. cheaper than any pulled motor and I know what i,m gettin

It all depends on which company you buy the engine from. Some are reputable, others are just a person pulling motors out of a graveyard like we would here and sending you their crap. The same rules apply to how the car got to the junkyard as do here. Wrecks, probs with car, probs with the motor etc. So it is a gamble.

I have a japanese imported motor for my supra and I can tell you the following things:

1. Yes the motor is a good motor with the required mileage.

2. It is not a drop in deal. Usually you will still need to refreshen up the engine. Seals, belts, gaskets, head gasket, water pump, alt etc. But if your current engine has good ones than swap those over. Not a must but who knows how long the engine has been sitting before it got to you. Also, it is easier to do a timing belt while the engine is on the stand/ground.

3. My cylinder head was trash and I needed to replace it.

4. Short block was good.

5. There are differences in the emissions equipment that you will need to swap over from your old engine.

I chose just to rebuild the entire engine rather than find out the hard way what is and is not working once its in the car. In my personal opinion, I would either buy an imported motor just for the short block or buy a engine from a local guy because most likely you can hear it run/know who you are buying it from. The more you pay, the better the engine will be and vice versa.

I was told the 22R/RE was not imported.
All the other jap low mileage motors I used, the longblock was all I used. Pulled all the other stuff off. Japanese emissions are different and they leave all that on the longblock.

Yeah if you are looking for a 22re you are not gonna be able to find one that is beign imported or at least with low miles these engines have been discontinued i believe in japan...... The closest you can find is a reman. But good luck with all of this!

Japan may have got the 21R-U Which is in the same family, but I can't say if it's a swappable engine.....

Correct, but comparable specs, It is a bolt in, but not sure of the emissions equipment.....

So....HC,
Did you ever figure out what was wrong with your engine?

Check Jasper engines, they have the 22RE with a 3 year 75K waranty. I have one in my Runner and it runs great. They are re-manufactured engines, not rebuild. Go on their website and check it out. I upgraded mine with a ported head, cam and some other goodies. The motor flat out runs, not like a V8 but then again it is a 4 banger. Just my opinion and you know what they say............

I'd much more prefer to have mine rebuilt. You know what you have when it's all said and done. I've installed numerous transmissions for people in the past from salvage yards with a 50/50 success for long term life. If you're looking to keep it, build it. Plus you can customize as you go, cam, porting, up the compression, waht ever you want to do to add power. just my .02

I put a 21R into my 1980 4x4 HiLux. Ran fine, passed smog, no issues. Carb, dizzy and exhaust manifold were not usable, think I used everything else. This was in 1990-ish.

I and my friends also ran MANY of the Nissan L series engines in our 510's back in the day. These engines got pounded, high revs, weber , mikuni or SU carbs, and they did hold up.

At the time we bought them from a company called Attarco in Berkeley, CA. I live in Sacramento now and Attarco is still in business up here.

Sorry guys I have been out of town. Thanks for all the info, I believe Iam just going to rebuild what I have. It sounds better to me to know what i have got.

KliersLC--- It was a blown head gasket.
