I have a recently purchased '09 LC on which I have mounted BFG At's onto the OEM 18" wheels. I located a set of '14 rims - also 18" that I want to mount the OEM Michelin LTX's to (less than 5k miles) for the ride quality when I am not driving on the beach. The second set of wheels did not come with sensors and after getting an OEM sensor price from my dealer ($107 ea before programming), smart alec that I am, figured I'd beat the system and I ordered a set of 4 Dormans Part #:974-033. I have subsequently found out that they are not cloneable and am now trying to figure out my next smart alec move. Any advice would be most appreciated. I have searched this forum only to be even more confused. Your patience with my newbness is most appreciated. Hammer away...

Great looking 200!

I have this thread subscribed b/c I'll end up having to do this. What @elkeye had done sounds exactly like what you (and I) need.

You will need the #s off of each TPMS, and then buy a Carista and request the beta from them. I have successfully swapped wheels/TPMS using the carista app. Tried with techstream and it wouldn't work. Bought a different cable but haven't tried again.

Other option is to drive to Discount Tire, and they will program your new sensors for free.

This is what I use. Toyota's require the obd2 feature to program in the new codes. I had the cheaper one without the Obd2 capability, which worked great on all my other non totota vehicles. I had to upgrade to the 501 to be able to swap wheels and tires around on my Toyota's.

You can find this tool on Amazon for 245-300.00.

My local Discount Tire sells programmable Schraeder TPM sensors (the ones with the metal valve stems) for $60/ea. and will clone your existing sensors for free with tire purchase. Not all employees there know about this, but the manager and a couple more knowledgeable employees there do. That way, you can swap your own tires/wheels, and your LC won't know the difference. I just bought 4 LC take-offs at my local dealer, and am going to use them for snow tires. That way, at the first snow, I can change my own damn tires/wheels and not wait in line at the tire shop, and save $$$ every time I do it.

I had the same dilemma and eventually gave up as was not worth the effort and cost. I have a set of tires just for summer when towing, etc... (original 18s) and set normally run (20s with original sensors). I run summer set without sensor and only deal with flat tire icon being on. I didn't even to go rebalance wheels after removing sensors and just added extra weights to offset the sensor weight.

So this arrived just now and figuring my next steps. Thanks for the recommendation. To be sure my understanding is roughly correct: Once the spare tires are mounted to the rims (with second set of sensors), I will use this tool to get the new sensors to communicate car so that the car can "learn" them. Then next year when i put the KO2's back on I need to repeat the procedure but with those set of wheels?. I am reading the manual and consulting YouTube videos to figure out what to do with the spare set right now. Confusion!!!

FWIW, if you have a smartphone, check out Carista. It does the same thing if you request the beta from them (free, and I have had the beta for almost a year), but only costs around $20 IIRC. You will need the TPMS code off of each sensor not currently programmed to the car, so write down the numbers of the set going into the new tires, and the current set which will come up in Carista (so when you put the original tires back on you will have the number for each tire).

OK your avatar is hilarious. "O Face". Carista looks very interesting and I figured someone had to have an app for doing this. What do you mean by $20 IIRC?

The Carista app charges a fee. If you buy the Carista BT adapter, they give you a free subscription for a period of time. However, requesting the beta is free, and the beta has the TPMS tools. Other BT adapters may work, but I had a cheap one that didn't so I bought the Carista one. It is now $40 on Amazon, I thought it was cheaper. The beta lets you do all the customization of the basic techstream, and the TPMS actually works.

Could Carista be used to reprogram Tundra TPMS already in my Rock Warriors if I have the codes?
No. Tundra TPMS is not compatible. It's a different part no.
