Laughed so hard I could not breathe for a good solid 10 minutes after reading that comic. Love the Oatmeal.

I have been working some shifts for the fire department, so I have had zero time in the past week to work on anything. \

You don't need to lie to a fellow brother ! You got off a 24, came home, thought about all of the stuff you could get done that day. Then you realized the wife and kids are gone because its a weekday. There's a Friday the 13th marathon on amc, and you did run that difficulty breathing call at 2 AM. You decide to take the day off, start drinking beer at noon and nap on the couch until the wife calls. Sound about right. ;)

Haha! I wish! Not a full timer yet, still got a business to run!

Slim- I'm 33 and that is exactly how I feel about Vegas!

Hoser

Got a little done yesterday. Finalized my in tank filter set-up. Here are a couple of pics.

What I started with
10626821566_18d8be4f1a_z.jpg

I pulled the stock filter off the pump and nestled it on the bottom support. It wasn't super stable. You can see the filter that I am going to use. I got it from polyperformance.com.

Here is the final set-up, I cut the bottom tab off the assembly, the filter sits right off the bottom of the tank.
My fuel system is now completely hooked up! Got 10 gallons of Diesel in the tank and my filters are full of it too!

I also got three powersteering fittings tigged on, and the turbo oil drain on the block. Just waiting for my buddy to braze the fitting on the p/s drain to the pump, and braze the oil return to block fitting, which should happen today. Then I can finish running oil and p/s lines.

Here is some preliminary routing.
On tig welding the p/s fittings, we mated the AN fittings to the stock inverted flare fitting. I cut off the lines just above the flare, so they would fit up in there.

One thing that has kinda been a PITA has been crossing over from metric to SAE for fuel lines and heater hose and what not. I just went for what was available at the parts store, which is not metric. They actually laugh at me when I ask for metric sized hose. If I have problems with leakage I will order the appropriate metric hoses. Just a random thought.

Otherwise, phew, it's getting closer and closer to firing! Can't wait!

One more thing, I am hoping the Diesel nozzle at the pump fits in to the filler on the truck. Anyone know?

Very few stations will have diesel nozzles that are smaller. Most will have the larger semi sized ones. I'd rather not be limited to stations that have the small nozzle so I'll prob drill mine out. There are threads on here about how to do if.

Routing

I have all of my fittings back and mounted on the engine. Got most of everything hooked up, but alas, I have to order some different AN hose ends to make the routing cleaner.

I relocated the breather canister to behind the head. It is a tight squeeze, but fits quite well. It will also provide a place to mount the TV cable for the trans.

It' not tightened down in the pic. It just barely clears the throttle linkage and glow plug.

I routed heater hoses on top of the valve cover. I am going to tee into these for the turbo connections, but waiting on the fittings.

I will probably end up building a bracket to mount these to so they aren't floppin around.

Here are some of the modified Isuzu fittings.

On left is the p/s drain, brazed to AN -10. Right is the oil return to block from filter with AN -6 tigged that feeds the turbo and AN -10 brazed to return oil to block.

Along with these 3 fittings there was also a AN 10 fitting tigged to the Isuzu oil drain for the turbo.

I am going to have to reclock the turbo to clear the drain fitting, which is not a big deal. Just gotta get 1/8" or so to clear the hose and clamp that will feed the intercooler.

I had a piece of exhaust bent and flared so I could start mocking up the down pipe, but I have to modify that a little to get it to clear the firewall. I have space on the pipe to cut the bend down, plenty actually. Those pipe benders can only go so tight.

Did I mention that I turned it over the other day? That was extremely gratifying! I will have all the misc. hose ends to finish hose routing by thursday, and it will be running by the end of the weekend. Then it's time to mount the radiator, condenser, trans cooler, and intercooler. Then it's time to test, trouble shoot and fix a bunch a s***

Looking good. Turning it over seems so small but understand. Your close

Can you give us more details on what your running for a transmission in this setup, and how you have it mated to the engine and transfercase ?

With the Allmaras kit, he is mating it to the original toyota transmission.

They provide an adapter plate that allows a 4BT to mate to either an A440 or A442F transmission, and an adapter plate that allows the 4BD(1,2)(T) to connect as though it is a 4BT.

The use of two adapter plates does increase the price a bit but it also moves the engine further from the firewall, which is nice.

It also means that if you wanted to squeeze some other transmission under your 80 series because for some reason you don't feel that the enormous A44x series is tough enough (it is), you could just get the 4BD to 4BT plate from Allmaras and use a 4BT to Whatever plate from Whoever. But the toyota transmissions are wide and low, and many have found that making other transmissions fit under the 80 series can require a lot of fabrication.

The other option is to have someone make you a Strongbow-type adapter. Big piece of aluminum and a lot of time in a large CNC means expensive, of course, but i believe CAD files are out there. This MAY be cheaper than getting the adapters from Allmaras, and may not be, depending on your machinist.

If using the A440 or A442f you will also want to have the torque converter modified for a lower stall.

Slim do u know what is needed to make an A442 all hydraulic short of buying a Rodney Valve body or swapping in an A440 valve body.

There are a very small number of all-hydraulic A442's in some FZJ80's with 1992 build dates.

I have no idea what it takes.

The guys from Jonsey's and Allmaras Machine swear that the electro-hydraulic A442F should be very easy to please w/o having to have it mated to the toyota ECM.

There is also a compelling argument that the A442F is much easier to troubleshoot and repair than the A440.

I haven't seen the details, though.

I'm under the impression that a compushift replaces the transmission ECU. Jonsey's implies that we can feed signals to the existing transmission ECU on an A442F and make it work just like normal. I don't know what circuitry, if any, this might require.

If you're bent on having an A440, though, I imagine it's cheaper and easier to get a used A440 and have it rebuilt.

So just to be clear, the allmaras kit gives you an adapter plate that goes from the Isuzu engine to the a442f bellhousing ? Then you just retain the current a442f to hf2a transfer case arrangement ?

edit: can you tell us what the adapters set you back cash wise ? Also are you using any kind of trans controller or just running it with the factory settings ?

Yo, here is the skinny on adapters and what not, and what I am doing. I am using the allmaras adapter. It makes the back of the isuzu into a cummins, 4bt or 6bt, they are both the same. It also clocks the engine 7 degrees to the passenger side. Then there is the adapter that adapts the cummins to a toyota trans. It makes it so the cummins fits up to the a442 bellhousing and torque converter. So, I have installed the a442 bell and TC on to my a440.

So there are two big chunks of aluminum between my isuzu motor and toyota trans. And if I don't like the isuzu I will swap in a 6bt and give that a whirl.

And the torque converter stall speed issue. I talked to dustin and he recommended staying with the a442 stock stall speed. He states you should drop the speed if you are going with the 6bt. The reason being is that these isuzu motors like to spin a little and run at a slightly higher rpm(for a diesel). And after driving the NPR around for a month or so, I could tell that these motors like to run higher rpms, much more so than my 24 valve cummins truck. The 3fe and 4bd1t have very similar redlines. Look at the torque curve figures and they are similar. And I talked to a friend of mine who is a master toyota mechanic (diesel and all), he said stick it in there and don't worry about stall speeds on the converter, it's ok. I was really hung up on it for a while, loosing sleep over it even!

Hope that clears it up!

No controller needed for the a440, it's mechanical

Price

Call Dustin (Diesel Adapters) for a quote on the parts. For the quality, craftsmanship, and what it does, I feel the price is worth it. It fits perfectly, no b/s about that.

The kit also includes a new starter, no? or am i conflating it with the Allmaras (4,6)BT kits sold exclusively by Jonseys?
