Too many pictures in my head right now. Mace you're correct that the shims go under the race.

If the pattern looked good after the rebuild, Am I safe to say that I do not have to change the shims under the large bearing race and all I need to adjust is the smaller washer and shim underneath the flange (which is a lot easier, no need to pull the larger race, smaller bearing or seal)?

Sorry for all the questions folks, this was the last part of my 40 that I had not tried to work on and just trying to figure this out.

Thank you

Generally, you should be good replacing the bigger bearing just make sure the pattern is correct and then adjust the preload with shims under the smaller bearing.

Finally got back to this today. With playing with the shims and a little sanding, I was able to the pinion pre-load to 10 in/lbs

After putting the ring back in and adjusting everything here are all the numbers:

Pinion pre-load (pinion only): 10 in/lbs
backlash: .0075
Pinion pre-load (final): 14 in/lbs
pattern: see below

So with all the info I think I'm finally ready to run this diff. What do you guys think?
