Is this the good kinda rust or the bad kind?

Stop kidding yourself, rust will never go away and you can keep saying to yourself they are hopefully the good kind..lol
 
The rust doesn’t look bad IMO, some fluid film or SEM or woolwax will help to stop it. (Fluid film will not remove the rust, just prevent it from spreading) At $25k and 300k I would be looking at other items….HG for instance, ANY oil/fluid leaking from anywhere, stains on the headliner, mods done by owner with FULL explanation of why.
 
That's kinda rust is on every truck in IL after like 3 months of its first winter lol. Literally nothing.

You folks realize that $25k in the Bay Area is like $10k everywhere else? I think they pay $8 per gallon for regular. A regular coffee is $5 and people abandon their Tesla's on the side of the road when they run out of battery power. I think kids get an Iphone 4 minutes after they are born there.

I don’t understand the reference to trail rigs
Trail rigs are not throw aways
IMO if it’s going to be a trail ride it’s more of a reason to have no rust as it’s going to be worked on all the time if you want to keep it in tiptop shape and reliable along the trail.
My 80s is a dedicated trail rig and has been since 2015. I like the fact that I’ve never busted one bolt or even had a hard time getting one out.
Because I started with a completely Rust free example.
I pride myself on keeping it super clean and reliable, even though I like to run the hardest trails.

Agreed. When I see someone posting about purchasing rust buckets “just use it as a trail rig”. Makes absolutely zero sense and I question if those people have ever turned a bolt in their lifetime.
 
To each there own of course but in my experience "trail rig" is synonymous with "hunting rig" or "farm truck" which generally means a vehicle that you maintain at a much lower standard because it doesn't need to be highway safe or road legal. Hunting trucks often didn't have brakes or get cleaned and spent most of their time sitting at the cabin waiting for seasons when they'd get used more. Farm trucks would have brakes but weren't always registered and often were just driven on the farm and immediate area roads. Some of these may get used for more intense/destructive off roading and were more likely to be truly on their last leg or throwaway rigs that might soon need repairs that would cost more then their value.

"Trail Rig" on this forum does seem to indicate a vehicle you put a lot of $$ into expanding it's capability and repairing it after weak links break or wheeling damage occurs. That's pretty different from a rust bucket you run until it falls apart and I assume the term "trail rig" has a range of meanings on this spectrum depending on whose using it.

Body is good, mild paint fade on the hood but it’s fine, everything else looks great, nice suspension upgrades, drives really comfortably on the highway. My 2 concerns were the rust and the 290k mileage but the latter seems ok given the impressive repair record.

In my neck of the woods we call these Beater Rigs
