Mr. Toyoda's idea of installing stainless to protect the paint definatly worked but what he didnt think about was rain and salt. I drilled the rivets out and guess what is underneath there? RUST
I will clean it up and rustproof it and reinstall protector. I will also make up 2 stainless pieces for where the rear bumpers touch. The 3b vibrates so much it wore a hole right through one side.

yeah it's too bad mr.toyota never grasped the concept of "bedding compound". would've solved lots of our rust issues.

I'd bed them down in some sorta goop when you reinstall...

Agreed. What were they thinking? Everywhere there is a seam/overlap they rust. My 60 is the same.

Did Toyota not "e coat" the bodies? Did "e coating exist in the 70's-80's?

Anyway... get a good etching primer on the bare metal and seam sealer is a good idea too.

"Weld through primer" is also a must when replacing panels and wherever spot welds are used to secure a lap joint. I swear by the stuff when doing bodywork.
