Not true. The 2UZ V8 in the 100-series Land Cruiser is also an interference-fit engine.
Had the 3.0 in an 89 4-Runner, timing belt went, engine coasted to a stop, I feared the worst, had it towed to my mechanic, he says this is your lucky day! the 3.0 is a no interference engine, slapped a new belt on and I kept driving, 290,000 miles, traded it in when I bought the 01 4-Runner and the 01 Tundra, same day, they gave me $4,500 for the trade in, it was immaculate.
Toyota is one of the smarter vehicle manufacturers, If the engine is Timing Belt driven: NOT AN INTERFERENCE With Timing Chain: INTERFERENCE ENGINE. Really hard to bend valves in a Toyota
