***Long story short: Can I rebuild the Denso "280-0168" with the factory Toyota Starter Kit part # 28226-74070, 28226-64370 Plunger Magnet part number 28235-55050 from 1.4kw Starter part # 28100-66040, like ERG80 stated? (yes I do realize the factory Toyota starter is also made by Denso).***

Let me start by saying I'm the master searcher and couldn't find an answer. So I'm attempting to identify my starter, (1996 LX450) so I can order a rebuild kit, (yes it's started to fail to start every once in a while). I did this on my last 80 and I believe the full part number was right on the label.

There are a few issues; reading the model number, and is there a difference between Denso and Toyota/Denso starters? And are both rebuildable?

So from my pic it says "Denso" "1.4kw" and appears to be part # "280-0168," (which I believe is the appropriate Denso starter). The last number almost looks like a "3."

Question, can this starter be rebuilt with the Toyota 1.4kw rebuild? Or is it an entirely different animal than the Toyota/Denso

What's the current train of though on buying the $110 rebuilt Denso starters? Are they just as crappy as the Autozone P.O.S.?

Or else I believe the 2.0kw 28100-66060 from CDan is around $200...

Thanks for the help

Non Cold Weather 1.4kw Starter part # 28100-66040.
Starter Kit part # 28226-74070, 28226-64370 Plunger Magnet part number 28235-55050.

Check with the mud parts guy closest to you to verify and order.

Thanks ERG80. I know the factory starter was a Toyota/Denso with the Toyota part numbers, just trying to see if my plain Denso (with different and shorter part number), has the same innards...
I also know these starter threads have been beat to death, but I sure haven't been able to find this specific info.

Did you ever get get an update here? Long dead, but it's crazily the only thread on the internet that i can find.
What is it you need to do and what truck and starter model?

Does this thread help?

Only curious, why rebuild something you can buy cheap?

Toyota sites show 28100-66040-84, and still have in stock reman Denso?
also Bosch F042000031
aftermarket try 113169 (HC aftermarket Bosch), or 17485...
Cross ref goes on an on...basterdized over years by people who think all kW are the same

don't buy off my comments alone, i've never replaced a cruiser starter motor

Yes, the Toyota rebuild kit will work. You can save money and buy it from ASP (Alternator Starter Parts Wholesale):

1691846051461.webp

etc., et.c, etc. This goes on for two pages. These guys sell everything for every starter and alternator. They used to list "kits" (collections of parts), but they don't now, for some reason. You'll need at least a new solenoid plunger, gasket for the lid and two contacts. You'll know more when you get it apart, but you can usually get by with just that. If you want to be fancy, get a new motor lead boot and two drain tubes.

More than likely your motor is OK, it's just your solenoid that's crapped out.

I also replace the short JIS cross point screws with M6 socket head cap screws, because the OEM screws suck and always cam out. I've had to drill out every one I've removed. You may only have to rebuild this one more time in your lifetime, but life's too short to screw around with cheap stuck screws. (no pun intended)

Oh, and don't take the screws off the bottom motor cap, unless you want to drill those out and replace them. There's a bearing down there that's nasty (guaranteed), but it doesn't need attention. It just wants it.
