is my fuel gauge toast?

How do I tell if my fuel gauge is bad or if something else is causing it to not function? My gauge has never worked, which I assumed was due to not having my aftermarket tank grounded properly. I switched in a stock tank this weekend. When the 55 is started, the gauge will begin to move. When the needle hits about 1/3 of the way up it will jump a small amount, and then go to empty. Are these gauges rebuildable, I do not feel like spending $110 to have SOR send one to my door. it is for a E-1969 fj55.

Had this problem myself when I reinstalled my tank. Check all the wires and connections to the sender and try unplugging the sender wire from the sending unit and grounding the wire with a test light. When you turn on the truck the light should flash for a few secs, then go solid, and the gauge should deflect if it is working properly. Try a search as the are a few threads about this from not too long ago.

I would go so far as to run a couple of test wires all the way from the guage to the tank to determine if there is a loom issue.
