First off to introduce myself:
I am hopefully a soon-to-be owner of a Landcruiser 70. I live near Detroit, Michigan, but I am currently on a temporary (2yr) work assignment to Japan. I am getting ready to return this year and have been looking for a Landcruiser to bring back with me.

This brings me to my first question:
The 1990 HZJ77 that I just went to look at had rear disc brakes installed. I don't believe that this was an option on the 70 series so clearly they were installed later. They look to me like the rear disc brakes from an 80 series, but from what I can find the axle length is different so they couldn't have just swapped the axles.

Has anyone seen a similar conversion, and know if they are from an 80 series or something else?
They have the inner drum type parking brake so I don't think that they are an aftermarket retrofit.

Any ideas?

Nice to meet everyone.

Thanks, I didn't know that there were rear disc brakes offered that early on the heavy-duty versions. I have only seen the rear disc brakes on LJ70 here, but I have only been looking at 1991 and earlier.

lj and hzj from japan uses the same rear disc setup from the factory.
yes yo ucan get the parts in north america

I am still trying to figure out what I can use for calipers and pads for the rear of my 77.
My dad got rotors from a FJ cruiser from NAPA that worked for his HZJ73.

According to toyodiy.com's part cross reference (could of answered my own question if I looked there first) the 1990 on 70 series disc brake calipers/pads are actually are the same calipers and pads as the 80 series. So as was mentioned they should be available in the US, you just may have to ask for 80 series parts.

Could these 80 series rear rotors/calipers be retrofitted onto a drum 70 series axle? Looking for a combo of cable lockers AND rear discs

Wow that is a blast from the past. I now have a 1HD powered 70 series that I have put well over 100k on with the drum brakes. Personally they have been plenty of stopping power for me.

If you can get a drum FF I would stick with that, the parts availability for the drums is better and they are a far superior e-brake.
If you absolutely have to have discs pony up for a disc 70 series axle. Or you can buy all the parts new and assemble from scratch

Good data- the latter sounds expensive as all get out, but I will keep that in mind. Was wondering if it's a matter of different flange sizes/orientations between disc and drum 70 series axles or if the axle housing is the same.

All disc axles will be full float.
Drum brake full float will have a different spindle
Drum brake semi float won’t have a spindle.

The simplicity of the drums, and the fact that they work to both stop the Land Cruiser AND e-brake it, is gold!

They say “Nothing can stop a Land Cruiser, not even it’s e-brake.” is true for rear disk cruisers. I’ve rebuilt mine from scratch, and can barely get the e-brake to function. I’ve got to work on the adjustments for it, but can confirm that working on the e-brake on a rear disk Land Cruiser 70 is a MAJOR PITA!!!!

I have 80 rear discs (same as 70 series) on my FJ62 and the best thing for e-brake was to smash the cable, equalizer and bellcranks over and over and over again on rocky trails like Rubicon and black/red trails at Windrock. Everything is so tweaked that the cable has way more tension and grabs immediately and it works really good now

Gracias.

Hello,

It would help a lot if you make your question in English. And it would be wise to start a thread with your question as well.

1HD engine and drivetrain conversions are frequent.

The Search Function is your friend.

Hi, I'm in Argentina. I have a BJ75 that I'm going to install a 1HD-FTE with its electronics on. That's why I wanted to upgrade the rear brakes to discs. I thought about installing everything from the standard 80. My question is: are all the parts compatible? Has anyone done it? Thanks.

I don't understand what happened, because I wrote in English, but Google translated it automatically.

I already have the 1HD-FTE ready with its electronics working, I just want to study the rear discs,
and thought this was a good place to discuss rear disc brakes on a 70 series and there was no need to start another thread.

Thank´s
