Yeah, I thought I explained that, sorry...it is a adhesive strip to attach the unit to the windshield as well as allow the sensor to "see" the rain within that box. This was a super easy DIY once you have that adhesive strip.
Think of it as a small sample size for the entire windscreen. The sensor will take the calculations of the frequency and size of the rain and use that for the wiper speed.

What's confusing me is that I also had residue of ahedsive on the perimeter of the unit. Safelite probably did that to reattach. Now I get it. Thanks for the help.
Did you know you can adjust the auto sensing via the intermittent knob on the stalk? At first I thought mine didn't work as it never wiped unless it was a torrential rain storm. Then played around with the knob and now it works great. Give that a try.
I"m in the same boat! At night in a misty rain it's down right dangerous. In fact i kind of was so mad one night about it thinking about the price of the truck that i said to myself, i'm going to write Toyota and document that i've notified them of this problem and if i wreck my truck in the rain i'm going to sue the piss out of them".... but than i thought thats a little extreme.

Meh... Rain mist and the subtleties of when each person wants wipers activate is tough without a human brain involved. Impossible, IMHO.
I'd just deactivate that first-world problem and control the wipers as God intended... hehe

To each his own, but IMHO if you are spending over $80,000 for a vehicle then the rain sensing wipers should turn on when there is water on the windshield, period. driving around at night with your windshield covered and having a hard time to see is dangerous and not acceptable. should be able to just make them normal intermittent wipers easily. The dealership is telling me it's impossible
$80,000 or $180,000...it still won't monitor the need for wiper/wiper speed as well as a human.
Disconnect the sensor...and I would wager you'll be much happier.

Another thanks to the Mud tech staff. I just disabled another piece of unwanted electronic stuff. Easy fix, I just pulled it apart and unplugged it. I pulled out the sensor while I had it apart and was going to leave it out but I figured I would just misplace it down the road. The whole wiper system works just like it should in manual mode.

I'm thinking of starting an unbuild thread to keep up with all the competition "build" threads. I have some of that going on too but this just seems like more fun. So far with just over 3000 miles, I got rid of the wiper sensor, 2nd seat video screens, third row seats and a few weeks ago I could also claim the TPMS light, but I fixed the latter. It sounds like the right idea. Soon I will have this truck just like the ones I like in other parts of the world! Apologies to those who like all this stuff.

Just did the same to mine a minute ago, truck has been home for a little more than 12 hours, my first mod. Very very easy, no tools required. There is a little U-shaped section you pull down towards the dashboard that releases the cover, it will literally fall off in your hand. Gently pull the connector off the sensor, put the cover back and clip the U-shaped piece back in place. Done in only a few seconds. Wipers work as they should now!
My auto wiper mode quit working. Just did this on my 2013 LC. Now I have controllable intermittent. So much better!
My lx wiper sensor looked a little different, or I was doing it wrong. I pulled the clip and the box+sensor fell. There were some metal brackets on the window that were holding it. I couldn't reach the plug well, so I had to pry 4 clips to remove the sensor from the housing. There was no push pin on the plug, so I just yanked it free. It doesn't seem to work though, just wipes once when I select the first wiper mode. I guess I'll try to get that tape and repair it.

Between this thread and this thread (LX570 auto wipers - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/lx570-auto-wipers.1289033/#post-14526834), I was able to quickly diagnose this issue after getting oem glass replace. Hamfisted tech appears to have punctured my tape. I ordered a new one.
Question is, there appears to be a residue on the sensor itself and the glass where it attaches - is it safe to clean/sanitize these areas for proper adhesive with the new tape? Just don’t want to damage the sensor and have to buy a new one.

Yes. Definitely clean with alcohol.
Do you apply tape to sensor and then sensor to glass, or tape to glass then sensor to tape/glass? Haven’t received the new tape yet so curious how it looks.
Not sure what the difference between the 570 and the LC but I completely disconnected mine and it’s amazing how much better the wipers are. The LC auto wipers suck.
Same system, and agree it is not the picture of high tech as with all Toyota products but I actually quite like it when it is misting or light rain when cruising around town. Anything heavier and if I am on the interstate or at night I typically over ride it.
