I got a new alternator for my 60 and I would like to put the old one in my 40 after replacing the brushes (Where can I order brushes?).
The 60 is an 84, internal regulator, and the 78 fj40 is an external. I would imagine I won't be the first to do this, unless there is a really good reason not to. How do I bypass the external regulator if I install the fj60 alt in the 40?
thanks

Brushes are available from any real parts store.

The 79-later alternators are very easy to wire. The batt terminal is the same as the 78, 10mm hex nut holds wire for charging batt.

The field (excitation) terminal gets power from a switched 12V+ source. It does not require a relay or diode.

Unplug & remove the regulator. Jumper the B/Y wire to the W/G wire. Connect the W/G wire at the alternator to field terminal.
Field terminal is in the 2 blade connector, closest to the center of the alternator.

Thank you thank you thank you. Jim, you have helped me out in the past and I am sure that you will be answering my questions in the future. Let me know when you are in Colorado and I will treat you to supper and a couple beers, and a couple more if you like. Thanks again.

I put the new alt from my 60 in and it still isn't charging. I'm not sure what to check next. I have continuity from the alt to the conn, removed, at the volt reg.

You need to have 12V from the engine fuse and the ignition switch at the IG terminal of the alternator. The easy way to get this is to splice the white/green wire to the black/yellow wire at the voltage regulator and then connect the alternator end to the IG terminal of the new alt.

If you have done this and it still doesn't put out, try jumping from the B terminal of the alt to the IG terminal and see if the voltage jumps up to about 14 V. If nothing happens, the alternator isn't working.

I may not have 12v from that black/yellow wire. I'll check in the morning. The alternator sure worked in the 60. Perhaps my 40 alternator is ok after all. I am optimistic. thanks for the help

It works. I didn't have 12v from the black/yellow. Once I got power to the alt charges fine. Thanks for the help.
