Inside Fuel Storage

What sandcruiser has said is pretty much my philosophy right now. It might change but we'll see.

I've driven with a fuel can on the back, 2 on the roof with 10 gallons of water on the roof with a roof top tent. Really I didn't notice the extra fluid on the roof over the tent. This is with the tall 6 inch lift I had as well. Now that I'm lower and a little stiffer I expect things to be even better.

The tent kills my aerodynamics as it is so I can't imagine the extra cans hurting things further.

we carried fuel both in and above the truck all over the place for a year and more.
If we are talking about one or two cans, roof rack is fine- I doubt that 10 gallons a fuel is going to make the diff between tipping over and not tipping in the vast majority of situations.

There's no way I'd carry 8 cans right behind the driver's seat. I know that they are built tough, but in the event of a collision, do you really want 40 gals of gasoline sitting 6 inches away? I don't.

Finally: Where are you driving that you think you'll need 40 extra gallons of fuel? Thats at least 300 miles from the nearest gas station (65 gals total, 300 miles each way with another 25% or so "reserve").

I mean... I've done 300 miles between gas stations in Baja. But never 300 miles *from* a gas station.

Just curious.

edit: in my opinion, a better solution is to carry 2 jerry cans on the rear bumper, then, if needed, a third and/or fourth on the roof. 4 cans should get you an extra 200-300 miles.

Gotta agree with sandcruiser. First get an extended range tank. Best place to carry extra fuel and by far the least hastle.

More fuel? With a 40gal. main tank I may carry and an additional 10gal.. That's effectively 500 miles between fill-ups. Haven't really been presented with situation where that would be a problem.

Fridges, coolers full of ice, water tanks, tools, spares, etc. ain't light either and if it all weighs the same, I'd rather have the fuel outside the vehicle on the rear bumper or rack. And, I don't know how good everyone else is on refilling a tank on the trail, but for me it is generally a bit messy. Gas vapors in the truck, no thanks.

If I roll, perhaps that NATO tank will hang in there... I'll be concerned about a few other things as well!!!
