Can I just get new inner axle to replace?

thanks

well I ordered them be here next week. I guess I will let you all know how good they are. :) I also understand and fully get, that you get what you pay for, but 1 yr warranty so who knows.

I found my axles grooved about as deeply as yours when I serviced my knuckles last weekend. I wanted to get it back together the same day, so I installed Speedi-Sleeve #99139 sleeves. Time will tell whether the sleeves work.

I think I just paid $90.00 for the right shaft from Toyota.

I call a couple of dealerships here in Portland area and they wanted something like 90.00 for the driver's side and 293.00 for the passenger's side. But both are were in stock locally. I just don't know why the short side costs so darn much compared to the longer side.

So the driver's side looks really good. But unfortunately one of the small 10m bolts that holds the dust cover on broke in the knuckle housing. How would I get this out or do I get a new housing?

I also forgot to ask, but is the thrust washer suppose to stay put? I mean it is keyed to fit in the notch and slide on up on the hub. The driver's side thrust washer needed to be spun to line up with the notch in the hub before the hub and everything would come off. It was not like that on the passenger side. The passenger side the thrust washer was already lined up and slid right off.

Just did my axle service and neither had to be spun, they just line up with the groove and slide in...

You can probably use a thin extractor on that. If not, I think the housings are relatively cheap. Like under $50.

Not sure how the thrust washer would do that. It probably came loose when you unscrewed the nut. If everything looks good when you clean and put it all back together, I wouldn't worry.

If you can't get the broken bolt out maybe check the parting out section or a local salvage yard for a used part.

Would it have been possible to install the seal not all the way seated to put it on a fresh area of the axle? I have done that on other stuff but not this particular application. Not sure if feasible here or not.

If you can't get it out by normal methods....Take that housing to someone who can just TIG weld a bolt or bolt head onto the broken one and that should do it. 15 min job

Good luck

That might have been possible but probably not the best method. I have done stuff like that too on my old fj40, but ended up having to redo the job again cause it failed. So spending the money on cheap axles now hopefully will save me later.

Find a used knuckle on here, just post up in the Wanted section and I bet someone will chime in with one for a good price...

I am going to try and clean it up tonight and use some penetrating spray/oil let it soak and then try to work it out.
But thanks for the advice and will definitely try that if I can not get it out. Wife really wants to drive her fj80 :)

Here is a link to a reasonably priced knuckle.

Also I had this happen to me over this past weekend. What I did was hammer a steel screw driver to make a deep grove and I unscrewed it out. Worked pretty well. That bolt is soft enough that it will make the grove.
