Info/Pics/Manual for knuckle and wheel hub rebuild/pack

The Haynes manual is aweful for this. I've a 74FJ with stock, drum front brakes. The knuckles are "indexed" and those bearings will be replaced. Am planning on re-packing the wheel bearings. The Haynes directions are pitiful, to the point of confusing me over whether I have to remove the hub and brakes or not. Also not sure if I have ball-joints or CV.

Anyone know of a good blow-by-blow with pictures of a knuckle rebuild and wheel bearing overhaul? I may create one anyway (ala the Locker one I did recently)

What's the best manual for this? Toy? Which one/source?

BTW, I did see the string on the 60 pages, but looking for year-specific information if possible.

I just helped a buddy do the knuckles on his minitruck front end. We used a write-up he got from 4x4wire.com and it was pretty good. Aside from having disc brakes, it's basically identical to yours since you also have Birfields (aka CV). Ball joints were only used until 1967.

I seem to recall that liquidoffroad.com had a pretty good deal going on knuckle overhaul kits that include all the bearings and seals.

It's not that complicated, just stock up on rags and paper towels. Also, a small chisel or drift to get the cone washers out.

The best link for this is here - it says 80 series, but if you look at Morgan's write-up it's 40 series w/ lockouts. All Cruiser axles are the same from the early 60's when they switched from ball-n-claw to present...if you discount the spline coarseness and full-time 4wd of the 80 series (just like drive plates however). I don't know of any year-specific info - yours will be the same except having to remove drums instead of disks.

Feel free to take pics and do your own however - and I can help with any questions you might have here (I've been in drum/disc manual shifts and 80 series )

e rock - yeah, I ordered the knuckle kit from liquidoffroad but the order is taking forever since I also ordered his tie rod end kit, which he failed to tell me was out of stock and delayed...
