My 87 4 runner has a pretty un butchered wiring harness, but i just cant seem to figure out why both my inclinometer light and HVAC controls light are inop. I looked through what FSM's i could find and most dont cover the inclinometer. Any ideas out there ?

Check wire continuity. Corroded contacts and broken wires can also dim or turn off lights.

The wires for the inclinometer and the HVAC controls are hooked up properly, they are not corroded being behind the dash and all. I just figured that mabye someone might know if they shared a common ground, and where that ground might be. If just one were out i would assume the bulb was blown, but those 2 are out, but all the other dash/radio lights are fine.

You would be surprised at what gets corroded where in an old car... A vehicle with an air conditioner can get allot of condensation on the outsides of the ducts. That can drip down on the electronics below.

BTW: to me wires and continuity always includes the grounds as well as the supply and signal wires, contacts, etc.. It is all part of the electrical circuit.

So you are trouble shooting wiring on lights that you dont even know if they are not burnt out or not?

Wow. Check the bulbs. I have had rigs with all the bulbs burnt out and nothing at all wrong with the wiring.

Before mud talks you into rebuilding the wire harness, do us a favor and check the bulbs and power in the bulbs socket first.

Hope this helps!

Thank you !

I knew the bulbs in the inclinometer were fine, but if they were on the same circuit as the hvac then i could just pull the glove box and access them, but if they were seperate i would have had to pull the upper dash which is a PITA. So thanks to 2nd gen toyota fan i saved an hours worth of work !
