Here's another idea for you. Go to the junkyard and get the spindle, shaft and hub off of a Suzuki Samauri. The hub is the same as a cruiser, Aisian. And you even get to use the lockout! Plus they look sweet.

now there is an idea...pretty cool too.

not so cheap, but...

Sleeoffroad.com has a killer spindle/bearing setup, about $100 but the walls are nearly half inch and it's a precision deal. Supports the 37 MTR on my 40 thru thick and thin!

Worth a shot. My first attempt was with a greasable pivot I got from a welding shop. Seemed pretty stout but it had a tiny amount of play with the weight of the tire on it. No big deal, but it proved too much vibration for the cam-over latch which snapped after a couple months.

This is pic of the pivot, sold by Rockstomper, I switched to - $45.00, way over built for my little 31" spare but I won't have to fix it again.

Be cautious of the one from Rockstomper. I have no previous experience myself but have heard stories of them flying off down the freeway. :whoops: What happens is that the base metal fractures throught the heat affected zone. Basically a material selection issue.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye on it.

Amazing how much stress is placed on a swing out carrier...
ours did fantastic for over a year driving through some terrible roads in Mexico and Central America. No worries.

It continued to do fine through us standing on it- both closed and sometimes open (by accident usually).

Took a few tree and rock hits, no problems....

I finally nudged a pole with it (smashed the rear window in the process- pretty strong nudge) and still, it held on. A week later and a few thousand crappy roads.... and the whole thing just fell off. One minute we were driving along.... the next.... we pulled into a gas station and a taxi driver pulled in behind us to tell us that the tire was in the road!! Fortunately, it was only a few miles back and we had some room on the roofrack to put it up there.

Anyhow- the point of all this? The carrier spindle was only barely welded on. There is almost no evidence that it was ever there on the bumper. I'll post a pic tomorrow. Amazing. The little bit of weld held that spindle on for nearly two years.

I disagree. I'm sure it'll hold the weight. I can ride my daughter's bike without it collapsing. Dividing my weight across both wheels = 100lbs on the front, add to that the fact that the fork will act as a lever from the point of the front axle, multiplying the stress on the joint. How much does your spare weigh? If it fails, I bet it fails where you weld it to the back plate.

The key to making the 'bike parts' work is to choose the right bike parts. There are good headsets and bad headsets. Get something with sealed bearings. Chris King, Cane Creek both make nice sealed bearing headsets. It's a very good idea actually.

Remember that you want something strong enough not only to hold the tire but to be able to stand the abuse on the trails! You don’t want to back into a tree or a rock and have the spare tire hit the body of the truck. Many times I have had my spare tire hit a tree or a rock hard, and stop the truck from rolling back…

On my truck I would not use the bicycle neck for the tire carrier! That’s for sure.
