Can't seem to wrap my head around this. i have a 2F engine out of a 1985 FJ60 in my '67 fj40. The green plug is not connected to anything (idle solenoid) and i was wondering if it should be.

If it is not, any issues I may face?

The green plug connects to the wiring harness and thence to the emissions "computer" on a stock truck. The fuel cut solenoid (aka the idle solenoid) needs to be grounded 99% of the time; the only time the "computer" shuts the solenoid is coasting down a long hill. If you don't have the computer, or it is inoperative (a common occurrence due to the cold-soldered connector failing) then you need to ground the wire from the solenoid/green plug, otherwise the engine will not idle (hence the use of idle solenoid instead of the proper name, fuel cut solenoid).

If it's this...

Then it does this...

yes, that is the plug. so i need to ground the plug. which color wire should i ground

If you've got nothing to plug the solenoid into, it just needs to have 12V connected to one of the wires and the other wire can ground to wherever.
It must be connected so that when the key is off, there's no power to the solenoid.

If you do have the female plug coming out of the wiring harness, turn the ignition key to on and check with a voltmeter which lead is positive.

gotcha - and thanks,

Do you have the FJ60 carb on the engine ?

If yes, and you have the TWO wire ICS, then you will need to ground the WHITE wire (under a screw on the carb air horn). The GREEN wire requires 12V + switched.

If you're using a carb with an ICS that has ONE wire, then the unit is already self-grounded and you'll just need switched power to the one wire.

Spike Strip, I have a question; Cruiserparts.net offers a rebuilt carb for my 87fj60 and they tell me it has a 1 wire ICS ( they tell me it will work). I am thinking about buying it because I can't find a 2 wire ICS for my carb. Would this 1 wire ICS rebuilt carb work on my 87 2f? Thank you. Sorry for the hijack.

Cool Cruisers has a two-wire. Solenoid, Idle

FAIK, the one wire will work in a FJ60 Carb, since the solenoid is grounded to the carb body. I've never done that so not sure.

I searched a bit and you're right - I used to see them all over the place. I'm sure SOR has them, new or used, rather than having to buy a whole carb. If you're set on buying a carb and are desmogged, one of the aftermarket no-smog Japanese carbs from @Racer65 would be nice.

I see lots of them in Aus, on Ebay, so they must still be in production, aftermarket.

Spikestrip, thanks for the reply. Yea I had to return the one I bought from cool cruisers, the green plugs on the new one aren't parallel, they are L shaped. I can't find one where the 2 metal plugs are side-by-side.

You may have to spice one in. Or just put a spade on the neg (usually white) wire (with the aftermarket you'll have to see which wire is ground) and just fasten under a screw on the carb top plate.

The Pos wire just connect to the pos wire from the harness.

Also, make sure it's not something else that's causing the ICS not to work, they very rarely fail.

Have you tried putting 12V directly to the ICS to see if it clicks?

Yea I hit it with 12v, no click. Good idea to splice, thank you. Dog gone it.

I spent a little more time looking for these... They really seem to have dried up. :crybaby:

It's getting harder and hard to keep this rigs running.

Toyota is over $100 for the ICS but they have them. the CCOT solution seems like a better idea

my fj45 has a 2F with the 1 barrel aisin carb(from the old F motor) w/ 1 wire ICS, just power going to it.

Landpimp, Thank you for that heads up. I will call a few dealers. Just so you know, the first person I went to was Onur and he couldn't get one. Amayama couldn't either.

Hey guys.. Hijacking this thread

Asking generally how you hook an aftermarket carb with fuel cut and vaccuum siwtch choke etc with a DESMOGGED rig. That ide stop solenoid clipped into that plug, SO assuming its already grounded? I know I still need my throttle plate, but not sure beyond that what needs to go on.... this is one of the chinese aftermarket carbs.

Also one of the wires is broken on the lower clip side of the fuel cut solenoid...Im holding up the part that broke off in my hand upon examination. This part broke off somehwere higher up beyond the tape. any recommendations on repairing this? could explain my uncontrollable revving when I turned on AC.

PS Im installing a rebuilt engine right now...

ICS will be a single wire on the Aftermarket carb. Hook that to the Green wire that went to the old two-wire ICS (should get 12V on the green wire with key on/engine off).

Yes, one-wire ICS is grounded through the carb body.

The Vacuum switch for decleration won't function now because it uses switched ground to function (through the emissions computer), with the two-wire ICS, which is no longer there.

Sell the switch if it's working; they're NLA.
