What kind of problem could it be? Its an 89 toyota pu witha 22re. Idle pulsates all the way to almost turning off then revs up way up. It does it while its cold and warm. It started last winter but was very faint and has progressively gotten worse and worse. It is to the point that it is embarrassing just sitting at a stop light or on campus. I am not sure what it is, wondering if it could be fuel, timing compression, or o2 sensor. Let me know what you think or if you have any more specific questions.
Pleas help!

Thanks,
Kyle

I would check your TPS sensor. It can be checked with a ohm meter. I had a lopeing throtle on mine and this solved it after a new 02 sensor and every thing else that was easy did not fix it, but the TPS is easy to check with some time.

wrong and wrong.
you guys all should check the FAQ there is a a section on this.

all you gotta do is adjust the idle. big slotted screw on the throttle body. slow the idle down.

I am going to guess afm... if you have a buddy with the same year truck try changing out the top of the air box with his..
im not trying to be a jerk here, but dont ever advise someone with a guess. even though in this case, it wouldnt cost the guy anything to try this, a guess is not somthing that flows well with automotive.
:D

to late.
I am just trying to help.. and got a punch in the nose.
adjust your idle.. then find the real problem..
if you don't like guesses and attempts to help some one be a bit more polite about it.
if I want a hard time I will go over to pirate.

sure I will give you a break.
the afm measures the air flow, if it is bad or has a blank spot the computer senses the motor is dieing and gives it gas. the afm then moves to a spot where it makes the connection again. now the motor has rev-ed up. the computer shuts it down. the violent part of his post is what makes me think that. vs the idle screw, the idle screw is a slow up and down of the rpm's.
unless he has messed with the idle screw, that is not the problem. not all of us have the time to measure out all of the ohms, positions of the sensors.
a quick check would be to just try a friends afm to see if that fixes the problem.
I posted up a guess and a way to check the assumption that I have from over 20 years of playing with these trucks.
I do not work for Toyota, I am not a professional mechanic, just a guy that loves Toyota's. I also like to see people having fun with them rather then trying to track down a problem.
I posted up what I think it is, that is all..
so don't jump on some one that is trying to help out a fellow wheeler.
if he lived close I would invite him over for a shot gun way of figuring out what was wrong.
as I have enough parts, minus the body and frame to build 3 maybe 4 Toyota's from my garage.

Kyle,

Have you had any luck finding the problem?

What have you tried on your truck?

Sometimes the trying a few things works well and you get lucky and find the problem other times its a waste, but with a older truck there are other people that most likely have had similar issues. I believe its well worth asking and reading up on what other people have tried and solved problems with, its saved me money here and there.
