Um...22RE's do not have a MAF sensor. They have a VAFM or a TPS.

So which one are you talking about again...?

I don't see how it could run without the AFM plugged in. The fuel pump won't run.

Agreed, exactly what are you unplugging? The sensor on the intake box is the AFM and the TPS is on the throttle body on the intake. Is it one of these two or are you unplugging something else?

When I unplug the MAF sensor engine runs perfect, when I plug it in the engine dies. Why?

As some have already mentioned the 22RE does not have a Mass Air Flow sensor(MAF), older EFI engines have an Air Flow Meeter (AFM), Also mentioned was the fact that the AFM is controlling the fuel pump so if no air is being drawer into the engine and or the connector was disconnected the fuel pump will shut off. Are you perhaps speek it of the Throttle Position Switch(TPS), it is located on the throttle body, it relays throttle movements to the ECU. The TPS allows the ECU to perform timing advancement, a poorly adjusted and or failed TPS could cause erratic engine condition such as stalling.
