You should be able to do a lost title search on the vehicle with a bill of sale and a vin inspection depending on your state laws... of course if it is of questionable origin you would have to surrender it.
 
I have a 77 fj40 that the title is about the only thing left to part. Not sure if it is even workable, and definately not the best way to do it, but it is available.
