I humbly petition the council of the wise for sage advice to save an 80 series.

Good morning Gentlemen and I am sure a few ladies,

I have recently taken stewardship of fine steed, a 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser fzj-fe. I have been asking a few questions as I work to get the vehicle sorted. However I think that it would be best to inform the council of the history of the vehicle so that I may enjoy the most informed wisdom.

At around 360,000 miles, the vehicle blew a head gasket and was subsequently parked for a couple of years. Eventually an enterprising young man picked it up and pulled the engine. A new long block was fitted and the head was rebuilt. The truck was then put back together. The young man then drove the vehicle for approximately 6 months. He then sold it to me.

The vehicle did not run well. It seemed to be idling fast and missing. I set about searching for the leak and found the hoses to all be old. I replaced all the hoses I could get too and I replaced the ICV and the TPS. I pulled the throttle body and found it to be filthy, so I cleaned it. I adjusted the throttle cables, as they were holding the throttle open. This corrected the high idle but I found the truck to run extremely rough and belch dark sooty clouds, staining my driveway. I checked the timing and it was never set. The distributor was just tossed on and the timing was off by perhaps 30 degrees. After adjusting the timing, I checked the oxygen sensors and they were completely covered in soot from the incorrect timing and weird throttle position. I also messed with the golden screw on the MAF not knowing what the previous owner may have done.

The vehicle seems to run okish now. I drive it around with out worrying to much. Occasionally it dies when coming to a stop, but starts up again without trouble. It has a loping idle of perhaps 250rpms when cold and might take two cranks to start. It is slow off the line (it was a bit faster before I started setting things right, but ran much rougher, with poor on highway performance) but it happily does 80mph. My oil pressure is extremely high and occasionally the truck shakes when idling in gear. All of these problems are intermittent though. I am thinking I must pull the engine, though I am louth to do so.

in short, new engine, everything else worn, old, poorly adjusted and filthy. Where does the council recommend I start?

-new TPS ( I am sorry, it was off brand, I think I might have to get the Toyota one)

- new ICS (Toyota)

-correct timing although a occasional misfire was noted while setting it

- egr system was deleted somehow, I am not sure what he did, looks a bit shady

-new coolant temp sensor

-New uptake hose

- New PCV valve and gasket (valve cover inside was filthy with oil scum.

Thst would be too much of a headache for me.....so I would've taken it to an indy Toyota mechanic shop from the start.

Cold idle problems, especially the '93-'94 variety 80s, are, IME, bad IACs. There are two tests for function in the service manual, one mechanical and one electrical. IME, the valve can pass both of these tests and still not operate properly. The only solution is to replace it. The OEM parts are NLA, but the 3rd generation 80 series ('95-'97) are functional substitutes – however, they are ridiculously expensive. I'd ask around for a use 3rd gen part (22270-66011). You'll need a new gasket (90079-60004), and likely new screws [2 ea] (90179-11004), too. You can try to remove it without removing the throttle body, but you'll likely eat the slot on the lower screw head, and then you'll have to remove the throttle body anyway. Better to just pull it first; you'll need a new gasket (22271-66010) for that, too.

While you have the throttle body off, clean the bypass galley that feeds the IAC valve. Even if the valve works, if this passage is blocked, the intake will be air starved with the throttle plate closed (which is where it'll be when the engine's cold).

That's where I would start first. Try @slow95z for the IAC valve; if you can't find a used one (the 3rd gen valves don't seem to fail, ever), you'll have to buy a new one:

I've never thought twice about high oil pressure in a 1FZ-FE engine.

Poor idle could be a result of misadjusted VAF, since you (at least) have "adjusted" it. The values for the correct idle setting are listed in the service manual:

Get a cheap multimeter (or an expensive one, if you wish), and check it out.

I wouldn't pull the engine unless I was going to send it to someone to rebuilt it, and I wouldn't do that, or even consider it at this point, based on your narrative.

I would, however
»change the oil, and
»the transmission fluid, and
»the gear oil, and
»check the condition of the Birfields (by checking the grease in the knuckles.

I might also invest in a yard of vacuum hose (90999-92004) (that'll get the entire engine done in one shot).
