I guess this explains the hard-starting on my B diesel!

Yeah, will be done right after I finish the power steering conversion. The two cables actually welded themselves together.

Awesome! :D
Looks pretty knackered alright.

edit: You could also use pcb sheet if you find it hard getting bakelite sheet for the insulators. You can get two types, the bakelite looking stuff and the fiberglass. Just etch the copper off in some acid. Make sure those bolts are centered in the oversize holes on the bracket and then do those nuts and spring washers up real tight. Then check with a meter for shorts.

She appears to be working!

Well, the 8.5volt plugs seem to have fixed her! Just fitted them and then hit the turned the key to glow. Sure enough, the glow controller started to glow beautifully. First time i've seen that! I'm really hanging out for tommorrow morning now so i can take it for a "test glow", haha! :D

Many thanks to Tom and his fountain of BJ40 knowledge!

To ad to what Tom mentioned,

North Amercan trucks have an aluminum GVW plate on the inside driver's door pillar which provides the build date.

I determined the build date for my HJ47 using a Russian website which used to list all the 40 series models and their production numbers, month to month, however this page is no longer on the web. I did print the page for HJ47 production and it's in my files.

Anyone with an HJ47 who wants to know their production month, and how many were made that month, can PM me with their chassis number and I'll provide the info.

Dont delete the shortcut to that site. It has come and gone several times. Maybe they dont pay their bills:meh:

Ha ha..............

I'm actually very confused that you couldn't get your glow controller to glow with those new incorrect 8V plugs fitted Dan. Because IMO they should have caused it to glow even brighter (and with added risk of "burning themselves out" and "burning out the controller" too).

Perhaps that plug brand is so poor that the "8V rating" is based on different standards to those used by more-recognised manufacturers? :frown:

But all's well that ends well...as they say. (And I now accept being regularly confused when dealing with these classic old cruisers.)

PS. I believe that owners of cruisers using "coil-glowing-in-the-dash-type glow controllers" should be particularly careful to buy plugs only from established manufacturers like Toyota, Nippondenso, NGK, Bosch, HKT, Champion (and maybe more). And I believe the best source of information on the correct plug specifications for your vehicle is still to be found in the Toyota EPC. ....
I think errors on the EPC are "few and far between" compared to errors found elsewhere - like in plug-manufacturers vehicle-application-charts. And I think the information supplied by any Internet vendor (on such old vehicles) should ALWAYS be viewed with suspicion.
