Hi guys I am just dreaming a bit but I was thinking my ultimate cruiser would be a brand new middy with the turbo diesel v8.

I then looked to see if they were in production around the world and the closest thing i could find would be the saudi shortys- and if i would to get another rig it would have to be a middy for that invaluable bit of extra space and wheelbase.

I did notice however that the HZJ73 comes with the 1HZ and a coil front end. Did any of these come with a factory turbo ie the HZJ74? And what where the years of production? I understand these have an 8inch front diff and automatic locking hubs? Is this the only downside to them as they seem a pretty awesome rig. Also how good a design is the front end suspension setup, could you get any decent suspension travel from it? Is it the same as say a 79series?

I also stumbled across the term HDJ73 what is this exactly? Nothing really seems to come up in a search.

Heres a few i prepared earlier

my understanding.

hzj73 ran from 1990-1998, leaf front end, 1HZ engine
hzj74 run from 1998-present, coil front end, 1hz engine

only troop carriers (hdj78) and pick up (hdj79) get the turbo

(certainly based on my 2004 parts catalog)

Thanks rick, so hzj74 doesnt mean a turbo 1HZ or anything- thanks for the info. Are they still making these brand new in japan? I coudnt see them still using a 1HZ.

That champagne coloured one is up for sale right now and i am drooling. Anybody know how much these are fetching? And how hard it is to get these from japan?

hey mate aus is the only place to get the v8 turbo diesel in the 70 series so ive read and the rest still get the latest front end but with the 1hz ,they do sell brand new 71 hzjs mainly on german sites ive seen them with a bit of google translate ,i havent found any new 74's i think the round headlights were the last of the 74s and from info ive read only aus got the turbo motor in the troopy and ute
search google or jpn imprt sites and you will come up with heaps of coil froont end landcruiser shortys and 5 door 76's

Mainly i just want a coiled middy for longer trips- smoother engine, more space and coiled front, while still retaining all the toughness and offroad ability i am used to. Clint i have seen a few of those new shortys about but it would be out of the question even if it had the TDV8. I love my shorty but its just not long enough!

The only downside i can think of with the HZJ74 is the small front diff centre but this centre is used in the 80/100series anyway isnt it? I wouldnt want to run any larger than 35s anway i cant see this being a problem.

Does anyone know what sort of price range i would be looking at for a factory locked, factory winched, low km HZJ74 on the japanese market?

i think when i was looking and google translaing jpn pages i think around the 21 000AU mark thats a ruffy , for a coil front 74, 5 stud ,newer cluster yadyada and they al seem to have all the chrome and all the fruit
start of google image and then follow links and you will come across some pages

ive dont know of anyone with or at least any of my mates with 80s 105's and 79s that have had front diff problems id say you should be right dont forget the vdj 7x series run they smaller front diff to

a few ive found floating around

Ya ,I would love to have a coiled front middy. BUT, I am not to fond of the smaller 8" front and or the 1HZ IDI .
Thanks for the pics.

The problem is that the 15 year rule expired some years back and the only way you can get these into oz ,is to own it overseas for 12 months and then apply to bring it in as a personal vehicle.

I also think you could probably get a factory turbo troopy for what it would cost to import a HZJ74

Hello,

I feel your pain. Middys are becoming hard to find, and those you get are either pricey or complicated to register.

Too bad. But there is always hope...

Wow i did not know that. How come there are a few newish imports hanging around perth surely not all of them were personal vehicle imports.

Problem is i dont like the troopys, never have never will.:doh: I am very specific to just the shortys and middys. I like the utes as well but I would have a shorter wheelbase anyday of the week.

Yeah pretty serious money we are talking about here. I suppose thats why there is no market for them here. The average aussie would never pay the same amount for a smaller vehicle when he can get a more practical troopy or ute for the same price.

hah yes there is always hope. I will still look into things because i cant think of a more perfect vehicle for my wants and needs. Dont tell anyone but i also looked at nissan patrols for a coiled turbo diesel shorty but it felt all wrong!

You make me sick hahah:D

Just read that Toyota are releasing a shorty Prado here in Australia, would prefer a 70 with the turbo v8 though.

Cant stop drooling over that 3rd pic from the top, have been drving my brothers 73 while my 79 is getting some psi mods such a great cruiser to wheel, makes me want a 1fz post 2000 middy so bad ,damn import laws

Are the MWB all FRP top?

Really like the look of the SWB hardtop, don't like the look of the FRP top.

Wanted a SWB hardtop 70 series, before going for the Troopy campervan.

Yea mate the middys have the FTP top

Hello,

Some 73s/74s came with soft tops as well.

If only I could get one in good shape...
