Ok guys,...here lately my clutch has been acting up...When i hold it down in gear and ride the clutch for a few seconds(any gear)...I lose clutch and i cannot shift and it does this weird surge forward thing?...Shifting is very had and i have to do alot of popping just to drive...Slave is dry...master seems dry(no leaks visible)...Even under carpet in the cab...I have bled the line also..This seemed to help abit but now very poor!...Could this be a pressure plate issue?...There is no slipping what so ever..clutch was supposedly new when i bought this truck...Any ideas???...Thank you...C

Your slave doesnt have to be dry in order for it not to be working properly... Same with the master.

With Hydro's, you have seals... And the seals can go bad and let pressure behind them, which is what I think is going on.

definitely slave or master cylinder, or both. I would replace them as a set anyway, they are cheap. Resist the urge to save money and buy the rebuild kits, most likely your slave cylinder is shot. Your local auto parts store should have them in stock, I see no reason to get factory parts since they are so easily accessible.

For THE BEST QC and fitment... I highly recommend OEM.

could it be the flyweel?(one shop said thats what it sounded like problem is)...The dude before me resurfaced it...i am out of town..And ya know how that is..garages tryin to get the most they can.

resurfaced flywheel... new clutch.... "weird surge forward"

Clutch disk bushings fell out, anyone?

The cheap POS clutch I bought in 1991 from AutoZone had bushings on the clutch disk only. I didn't know the difference at the time, so I put it in. It lasted 1500 miles and the bushings disintegrated, all the washers fell out, no more clutch.

I took it back in pieces with the receipt, and the guy tried to give me another one. Yah, I don't think so.

what town are you in? I take it you're with the Runner?

Oh yea baby...I am in panama city beach chaperonin my youngun and his mates...It is somwhat drivable but very dodgy...Stop and go trafic bad..as long as i am moving i am fine...but when i have to shift it is tricky.

Should i try my luck and drive it back home and get with local mechanic?...or throw myself to the sharks down here...I mean they can put a slave &master in fairly cheap....But y'all may be onto somthing about the clutch bushings?...It seemed to do much better after we bled it...Shifted pretty good for about 60 miles then started doing that wierd stall, surge forward lose clutch thing,...No slippage whatsoever when driving,...Just poor shifting.

can you speed shift?:D (shift w/o using the clutch)

As long as you aren't using it, it should get you back.

EDIT:

Also, I work on my own stuff so we're prolly losing something in translation....

If you're going to get somebody else to do it, IMO location doesn't matter...

If you can do the job yourself, I'd try and make it back.

Ok, easy and logical troubleshoot...

Go to local dealer/ parts supplier if you're in a pinch, get clutch master and slave cylinder... Replace yourself, via FSM in the FAQ section...

If symptoms persist, then the problem is in your clutch... It will have to be removed...

If problem disappears after you replace the hydro's, then problem solved.

If it persists, you arent really out anything... And with no slipping at speed I'd say with using the clutch as little as possible, you can get home..

Providing you're not in Canada and trying to get back to Texas...

Speed shift?...Not really sure about that?...I have zero tools...And i am not good at trouble shooting,...I will have to hire it out,...parts(slave&master look new)no leakage visable. To me it feels like air in line.Perhaps we did not bleed it good enough?..Some dude down here said they need to be gravity bled which can be a pain?...We just did a quicko bleed.

I dont follow the surge comment.

If you have to pump the clutch to get pressure, you have an issue with either a failed component or air in the lines. I am going to guess a failed slave.

How did you bleed the system?

If you have a failed system component, it should be obvious everytime you get in the car i.e. the clutch will feel very soft because the line pressure will have dropped over night.

And the reason it probably worked well after you bled it is because you removed the air but then the failed component/line allowed air back in.

I would not recommend buying a cheaper master or slave. Go OEM.

replacing the parts IS the troubleshoot...

All you need is a ratchet, possibly an extension and a 12mm socket and wrench...

You MIGHT be able to do the whole thing with a wrench, IDK...

Whoops, and a line wrench for the line nuts.

YouTube - How To Shift a Five Speed Without Using the Clutch

Air drop me into the middle of Africa with a Toyota truck with a bad clutch master cylinder, the parts to fix it, and an open end 12mm wrench... And I'll see you in the next closest town...
