I want to get at the gas tank on my '76 - but there is a spare tire in the way. It's got a loop of chain that hangs down- and I have pulled it toll I turned blue, but that's not working. Anyone have any tips on how to release the spare?

Take your spare tire crank and handle and insert the crank in the rear of the vehicle (the slot under the tailgate), turn to the left (counter clockwise) and watch that baby come down.

Of course it could be rusted tight and you may have to end up cutting the chain.

The removal tools should be under the rear seat bottom.

Hey - I can't find any tire tools to buy and I really need to crank down my tire - and was hoping that someone could post a photo of the business end of the crank, plus a measurement of how long it is, I may have to look into creating the crank from metal rod stock...

All you really need is a piece of round bar stock, probably 3-4' long (you can easily measure it) by 1/2" or so, with a 1/4" x2" rod through the end of it within about 1/4" from the end and a means to turn it.

You can also use the tools from a Toyota pickup or a '60 series. I'm sure there are enough of those at the local wreckers.

Hey- thanks for the reply, I can easily visualize it now!

I hear those cranks are still available from the dealer...

Yep, $35 bucks or so I think, was mine.

Hey, if you haven't got it off yet.
I just had my tank out to weld up the rear half and mount a 3rd row. Now its back and I'm happy.

You can remove the 8 bolts that mount the crossmember to the frame (the tire carrier with the chain loop mounts to this) and the whole thing will come smashing down - ie use a jack and or blocks when you start doing this.

Have fun.

Take it to the dealership for an oil change. Buy the 5 dollar tire rotation, let them figure it out.
