Stripping my engine to paint the block and replace all the gaskets and need to remove the oil filler tube. A search revealed a way to seal one up but not how to remove it. I have the oil pan off and there is nothing holding it in place leading me to believe it's a press fit? Tried a strap wrench and a hammer with a block of wood. No go.

Suggestions? (FSM just says remove it but says not how...)

actually I was looking at this part, because you said you have the pan off, might just be easier to drive it out instead of pulling it out.

I HAVE seen this problem before. Once. Old school dipstick [round shaft, not flat blade] dip stick tube is supposed to stick out of the block diagonally. Somebody had 'bumped' the motor hard and bent the dipstick tube straight up! Kinked the dipstick in the middle.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. Gather up a replacement dipstick and tube, and an oil pan gasket [just in case] before you start. Put a block of wood behind the tube and try and pry it out away from the side cover. It should come out to the point where, if you were looking at the motor from the front, the dipstick was pointing towards 11 o clock. If the tube snaps before it bends to that point, you will most likely have to remove the oil pan to drive the broken piece of the tube up out of the block from the bottom.

Good luck.

Post back how it goes.

Yes I can see the end of the tube inside the block. I would need a pipe that is the outside diameter of the fill tube to drive it out plus the crank makes it a bit hard to get in there. I'll shooot a pic here in a bit and post it.

It's a press fit. I had to tap the one on my f135 back in when I got it, and swapped it on the F145s. If it really is tight in there, maybe some Kroil, heat and a pipe wrench near the base to loosen it?

Well the pipe wrench did the trick along with a strap wrench.

I broke it loose with the pipe wrench then used the strap wrench to wiggle it out.

Sweet! Now you get to figure out how to get it to stay in again when you reassemble. :D

JB Weld? :D

Actually though of just smearing a thin film of silicone sealant (not enought to come off in the engine) on the tube then sliding it in.

Not sure I'd go that route. The silicone may not hold up to vibration and may even make things worse. I'd probably sand it with emery cloth and tap it in well. Then maybe just a little silicone at the top edge to seal.
