How to remove headliner and install aftermarket roofrack in 2016+ LX570

I manage to tear the headliner of my LX570 while transporting 2x4s and am having an upholstery guy fix it over the weekend.

He is a professional and very well reviewed, but given the complexity of removing the headliner I'm worried the shop might damage the trim parts/break clips etc. Three questions for the experts here:

1- Should I be worried?
2- Do you really need to remove all the A,B,C,D trim pillars before removing the headliner? I mean as per this guide all the panels were removed - but I'm unsure if it was for another purpose or is it a pre-requisite for removing the headliner?
3- Suggestions? Should I work with the upholstery pro to remove the headliner using the instructions in this guide? Or just let him do his job lol...

Thank you so much in advance!
You unfortunately have too, it’s all being help up on the edges. And I can’t remember if there are clips here and there too.

The clips around the sunroof were annoying don’t let the headliner fall without any support or it will crease.

Thanks for this tutorial. It was very helpful when installing a rear dashcam.

So, I just got everything removed and realized my brackets did not come with the metal clips to hold them to the roof:

Anyone aware of an off the self part I could used instead?

If not, I may try to 3d print something.

I wonder if I could just loop a couple small zip ties through. I’ll have to look closer tomorrow

Alright, I think I found a solid off-the-shelf solution. I grabbed some of these M6-1.0 extruded u-nuts from Carquest along with some M6-1.0 x 8mm set screws. I screw the set screw in from the bottom of the nut to pinch the bracket from the bottom and the top side of the nut has the little retaining tab that falls into the hole in the sheet metal of the truck. This secures the bracket extremely well, and you would have to actively try to push the bracket out of place with a decent amount of force to get it to fall.

So, it turns out that Prinsu supplied Rivnuts with their 2016+ LX rack and you technically do not need the Toyota brackets. I am still going to use the Toyota brackets since they are considerably more robust looking, but just a heads up. Additionally, there are no M8x1.25 screws included with the 2016+ Prinsu rack since the rivnuts they supply are 1/4-20, so you would need to buy the M8 screws.

You still need to drop the headliner to get the stock rails off though.

While I'm a fan of a rivnut when access to the back of the item is unavailable, or the load isn't critical, I think using the factory brackets here is the way to go. They will be significantly stronger than a rivnut. There are several documented roof rack failures where rivnuts were used and then the load got some shear forces on it (think accidents, stop/start on a side hill, stuff like that). M8 is also 1/16th thicker than 1/4'.

Once there are a couple bolts and a zip tie (or clamp, like you found), in them, they are generally hassle free.

Just FYI for anyone who bought the Prinsu rack for the 2016+ LX but wants to use the Toyota brackets and M8-1.25 screws, 55mm is the ideal length. It just pokes through the bottom of the bracket, meaning full thread engagement without a bunch of excess hanging down.

If anyone needs brackets (the ones that go under the headliner) for the LX, I have an OEM set that I will give away, but you will need to pay for shipping. My dad ended up selling his LX, and these went unused.

Sending PM! Have a Prospeed rack that I’m getting around to putting on soon, could use these.

Edit: having a hard time PMing you for some odd reason. Alright to start a convo instead?
