How to make block ice. Need a container that won't split.

I've tried the exact type pictured many many times. The epoxies and such I use in my work come packed in them, which makes them free to me. They always seem to leak when I use them, talk about a slimy mess.
I wrap them in freezer paper, then stick that in a heavy duty freezer bag. When I freeze them, I freeze them between two aluminum cake pans. That way they don't have a bump in the side. That seams to extend the life a bunch. I get plenty when I order vaccines for the cattle.

Seems a lot simpler just to freeze an empty recycled Cranberry juice jug <full of water>.

I was brought up to reuse stuff, and that was my way to reuse them. Biggest issue is the one shot nature for a trip so I use water ice for long trips. I use the freezer packs when grocery shopping and going to parties.

Having drinkable ice might just save your life one day in the boonies... I'll take any extra gallon I can get with no additional space needed.

they are slimy. I use them as well, but double-bag them in quart-sized ziploc bags. works great.

I use the Crystal Geyser 1 gallon jugs. They're square in shape and 4 of them fit in the bottom of the Coleman cooler perfectly. No melted water in the cooler and emergency drinking water if needed. Keep drinks in a different cooler. This method has kept my food cold for 4+ days in the SoCal deserts.

^^^I do the same thing, and in various sizes depending on the cooler. I also freeze most of our small individual waters - 12oz, and fill the cooler with these.

In addition, I freeze, at home, anything that can be frozen for a trip. Then arrange the food so it thaws in time for use. We go for a week and things stay nice and cold.

I also pre-chill the ice chest over night before loading, and everything going into it.
