How smooth before primer

Is it better to use a 120 grit, 220 grit or 60 grit before applying primer? I've been using the 220 grit and it's not turning out the way I thought it would. For the record this is a " rattle can " paint job but I still want it to look ok from 20 feet. Right now I'm cause I'm having to strip and redo some of my parts.

The problem is that my primer doesn't seem to be sticking to some parts. This is after a final wipe with a degreaser. I had been using 220 grit on my orbital. The primer is Rustoleum enamel primer and the paint is the same brand.

I've been waiting about a day, sometimes longer due to work to begin applying paint. The weird thing is that certain pieces are turning out great. Again I am not looking for car show quality, just don't understand why some of it works and some of it is s***.

question.....may sound dumb we watched a guy at the shop sand and repaint sand and repaint.....got to the point he was throwing the tools across the shop. He described the very same thing you did and it showed. Turns out some folks have more oil in their hands than others. So the solution was 2 things one he started wearing gloves(powder) 2 we made him started using this
Wipes & Tack Cloths

New guy we thought he was but he had no clue about it.

My suggestion would be go back and sand it all down and after you primer check for spots that you may need to spot puddy then sand it all down with 400. THEN take a green scrubby(like the ones you use for washing dishes) and buy DAWN....it must be Dawn then wash the rig down with that.

Then if you wish use a tack rag

Greasy hands.......possible. I will be re-painting some parts tonight and will try the gloves and will pay more attention to degreasing, could be that simple maybe.

I work part time preping at a body shop. We sand w/ 180 merka, wipe w/ prepsol or final klean then use tack rag. When you wipe use 2 cloths (lint free) 1 saturated w/ cleaner and 1 dry . In small areas wipe on wet then wipe dry. tack then spray. Ledt paint flash not dry between coats. If it does dry use 220 to scuff surface for next coat. Good luck.

Try some acetone, and tack cloth, then follow the instructions of the paint to the smallest detail...

Well I just finished the first coat of paint. The primer went on just like it's supposed to. I took my time with a commercial degreaser, and was very careful about touching anything with my bare hands. Could be I was in too much of a hurry before, wanting to get done so I could begin reassembly. I haven't driven the truck in 2 years, whats another couple days. Thanks for the help guys.
