My home AC has lost all of its 410a freon. The unit is 2.5 years old. It cost me $485 for the dye test so the technician can find the warranteed part........Once the part is replaced, it will cost me $75 per pound(16 pounds needed) for 410a freon. Those prices seem excessive. Are they?

AC costs have skyrocketed in the last 5 years...

One of my buddies runs PDQ Mechanical...Give them a ring, I believe they do free estimates.

Hi, Your warranty seems like a poor one, have you looked closely at your paper work? Maybe the co. that put it in can help you out here. Mike

Most units are warrantied for a minimum of 5 years, some 10 ... that should include all parts, supplies, testing, labor, etc

He wants to charge you the price of R22. He is nuts. 410 should be like 15 bucks a pound.

Thanks for all of the responses. I am in Tucson so I will not be able to take advantage of references to specific businesses. The warranty is poor. It has a 5 year parts and a 2 year labor. Of course, we are just outside the labor coverage! There was no warranty for replacement Freon. It is frustrating that I have to pay so much for them to find the warranteed part, and then be charged to replace the freon that was lost due to that defective part!!! It seems that a 25lb cylinder of freon is available online for $200 or so. I guess that an EPA certification is required for me to purchase that material myself?

Ya might want to give Rex a call at Coolstream here in town. He might know a reasonably honest thief......er, A/C technician. :) His shop specializes in auto a/c, but he may have some insight into costs for supplies, etc.

Couldn't you just buy some freon and a set of gauges and fill it yourself ? Just google the model of ac unit you have and you should find the manual online.

I wondered about that. Feon seems to be available online for $200 for 25lb container. Not sure whether EPA certification is required to be able to purchase Freon. I am pretty sure that if I went that route, I would void any warranty. I talked with one fellow today, who said that any registered contractor can work with manufacturer's warranty and that he would charge $25 per pound of Freon. I currently am in the process of waiting the results of the dye test with first contractor. I may try to switch mid-stream.
