How many years on a OEM battery?

Since these things are that good why don't owners just replace with the OEM Panasonic?

I plan on using the big Odyssey, like Jim. Odyssey gives you both a cranking and deep cycle capability. I've used them for years in multiple trucks and far prefer them to Optima's. Like most stuff we replace on these trucks, usually it's for a performance or functionality upgrade, and I think that's the case with the battery.

Also, in my case, using the Hellroaring dual batt system and taking power from the main battery terminal (not the starter), there is the possibility of terminal corrosion inhibiting power delivery, since the Panasonic is a traditional lead acid battery. This is not really a concern with, say, AGM type batteries.

Just about everything is that good from the factory on a UZJ100. Why do we change anything? Usually to tailor the vehicle towards our more specific needs.

Sure a battery is awesome from factory, but maybe we need a dual setup or a deeper cycle. Maybe they have a bunch of inverters in the car and need more amps per hour or something.

Makes sense. Sometimes I think we get won over by advertising from the industry. I know I have on several products.

Because the dealers sell the OEM panasonic from Japan for $900.

For some reason the dealers sell different "Made in the USA" batteries rather than the good OEM. It's like trying to get the original oil filter.

My battery was still working fine when I replaced mine at 80K miles after 6 years. However, it was starting to weep a bit around the terminals. Dealer said recommended I replace it ....so I did.

There is also a 1500 Odyssey now.

This is where I bought my 1200:

Yes, I noticed the Odyssey PC1500 will fit the stock location w/ mininal mods. The main problem is the terminals are reversed and they don't seem to list one w/ reversed posts.

The other reason not to get a replacement OEM battery is because you'd be hard pressed to find the Panasonic battery or to find one at a reasonable price. All the dealers I've called carry some other brand. The only replacement Panasonic batteries I've seen w/ a similar size and capacity (100AH) have flat terminals (looks like a flat nub of metal w/ a hole in it).

Just ordered my Odyssey. I ended getting the pc1700MJT from west coast batteries ($198.95+shipping, better than any of the prices I found on the web). The other options were the pc1500 (but terminals are reversed and they don't make one yet non-reversed) and the pc1700/65 (group 65 size, terminals also reversed). The PC1700/65 measures 11.92 x 7.17 x 7.58, so closer to the OEM size (about 12 x 6.75 x 7.8).

As far as keeping the battery from sliding around, the guy at west coast batteries suggested removing the battery from the metal jacket bucket using a putty knife (it's glued in there) and bolting the bucket down to become the battery tray. One could use a piece of plywood w/ a hole drilled inside it so the bolt is flush and doesn't poke into the battery. Another possibility is getting a group 30 cast aluminum battery tray base. I also got a 3A BCSC 3-stage charger/trickle charger since the vehicle sometimes isn't driven for a few weeks.

BTW, he recommended only using metal jacket batteries if it's in the engine compartment due to heat shielding.

Jim,
I just put a 1" thick piece of plywood (actually a 3/4" piece and a 1/4" piece) in the stock battery tray under the battery and used the factory hold-down bracket and it worked great. I sprayed the plywood with some flat black spray paint and you couldn't even tell the spacer was there. Pulling the cover off a new battery seems a little extreme to me.

Here's some more info: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=59989&highlight=odyssey

So why didn't you get a OEM battery?

Dan,

Is it possible to buy the original equipment battery that comes with a new 100?

Thanks, Matthew

Nope, only in a new vehicle.

If they were imported loose the hazmat containment costs and tariffs would push the cost to probably over 400 bucks a copy.

Nobody wants to spend that much....;)

OEM/1997/130K

I will be replacing the battery this weekend. I've been struggling with terminal corrosion for the past month and I'm tired of cleaning them.

In fact, here's the P/N I pulled off the panasonic: 105D31L-MF. Try to do a search on that...nothing! IMHO, I don't think they're sold in N. America.
