Just bought a 1971 55 Its all stock other than an 8point cage rock sliders and a 2 or 3 inch shackle lift with 33s on the stock rims(also the roof is rusted off. The only way it moves is if im in 4low.... 2high and 4high moves a lil but not enough power to make it go. All 3 gears work and theres no smoke at all.

What should i look for as problems??:bounce:

What would cause the no power feeling ??:bounce2:

should i change the carb or rebuild it is leaking a lil gas.

Any info would be great thanks

Jack up one tire at a time and try to turn by hand. Maybe locked up brakes? Does it run smoothly when just sitting?

I think I need more info before diagnosing...need pics too.
:flipoff2:

My all stock 75 FJ40 with 2F and 31s would "easily" do 65mph.

My 2F'd 71 FJ55 with 31s would do around 40mph... before the rust in the tank would kill the carb.

As for the lack of power issue, do the standard battery of tests:

  • Compression test
  • Check spark plugs and wires
  • Timing/dwell
  • Carb tuning
Might also look into ebrake dragging and regular brakes dragging.

I have not done a compression test, will have to get the tools to do that, it came with just replaced spark plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and points( the little thing under the rotor i believe).

The brakes were also gone thru, along with axle seals and transfer case seals, (got a bill for a lil over 1,000 done 4 months ago). It rools fine if i take it out of gear.

Not sure what dwell is, is that the adjustment in the points part of the distributor?

Do you know of anyplace that has cheap rebuild kits for the stock carb? Sounds like thats the next thing to look at along with the compresion.

Where are you located?

depends on how much you don't mind the whining of a straight cut three speed;)

i could do about 60 in my 71 fj40 before the noise got intolerable. course i was in college then and pretty destructive;)

did you get this rig from a guy up near Bakersfield?

Oh, and I agree with Pighead

more info and pics

Fast?

My all original 71 FJ55 is comfortable at 60 (3000 RPM) - loud at 65 (3200RPM) and scary at 70 (3500 RPM). I'm running 31s.

All the check points all ready suggested are great - one simple check you might try to see if its engine, drive train or chassis (brakes etc) will engine rev easy and smooth? After gaining speed does vehicle seem to slow faster than normal after removing foot from accelerator? How about after speed depress clutch and check for unusual deaceleration ---- and then actually take out of gear and coast in nuetral to try and see where the "hang up" is?

I live in So Cal also, anyone with a FJ40 or FJ55 with an original F engine /drive train should be able to help. I'm Huntington Beach if that's close.

When you get it runjning right it will get about 10MPG in town - out of town, towing, speeding, or crawling, nothing seems to change that. :steer:

Good news after messing with everything, and i mean everything and 10 or so friends one mechanic looking over it saying all is right. I figured out that the distributor cap was on backward and that some one had took the clamps that hold the cap on and switched them so that the cap would go on 180degrees the wrong way.

Compression 130 125 125 125 125 130 Oder of 123456 cylinders.

Really weird i know, and very simple fix,,,,,,! it is running great now, i guess the timing was so way off that it had no power but still ran and drove only in 4 low.

Thanks everyone for your time and help.
