It's a royal PITA with mine.

Been trying brushes and paste and even gauze wrapped around my finger.

Anyone have a great technique?

You have a local butcher shop? I mean a real one, that processes whole animals, not just puts the pre-packed slabs on the shelf. If so, go get a box of beef knuckles. My dogs chew on them for 2-3 weeks each, eventually getting as much of the marrow/soft bone out as possible. Their breath smells like meat, but their teeth are clean as a whistle. I do this about every 3 months. Keeps the tartar knocked back and my vet says my dogs have the cleanest teeth around (for a K9).

Primarily dry food, rawhide chews. Never have to worry about it. Vet says they look great.

I will have to get some beef knuckles for the little ones.

How do you keep the dogs from stealing them from each other?

Make sure there are more bones than dogs. They'll work it out.

Buy a whole case, It'll give you something to trip over in the middle of the night.;)

Let them do it. Then give a freshy to the empty mouthed dog. Pissed the hoarder off to no end. She'll spend the next 30 minutes either begging for a new bone or pacing around the other dog waiting to steal it. :D

Of course, I have a great butcher who saves them for me at no cost. He saves bull fries for me too. MMMMMMMM.

My dog just had the canine dental vaccine 2 months ago, it was a last resort to save her teeth. She still gets a brushing nightly.

I don't know who this is, but found it on teh interw3bs...

I feed him dry. Never thought of the knuckles. Thanks for the tip.

I give him oxtails and marrow bones, but now I'll try the knuckles too.

Gonna inquire about that vaccine too.

sugar free taffy...? :D

nah, j/k, don't do that at home, kids... :)

My German Shorthaired Pointer Henry gets his teeth brushed about once a week or twice. I started when he was young getting him used to me sticking my fingers and objects in his mouth...so, he doesn't mind it now. In fact I use a Sonicare brush now...it makes a little bit of a mess but, his teeth and gums are in great shape.

I also cut up Greenies and give them to him as treats. I use CET Poultry Toothpaste and he absolutely loves it. Henry has gotten so accustomed to his dental routine that the vet recently provided me a scraper and taught me how to use it...so, I know use a dental pick and can scrape off any plaque as well.

How does that work?

I'm guessing something (like Chondroitin) in the knuckle cartilage......don't know for sure, but that makes sense to me.
