silly question here, but I don't have an FJ55 locally to compare to...

question one: there are two main supports to keep the roof's shape... should there be any sort of padding between the support and the roof? Otherwise PO has stuck padding in. And/or, should the support be welded direct to to the roof (currently, it's just welded where the support beats the pillars).

question two: hood support. the hood has a web of supports to also keep its shape... should these supports be welded to the hood part? The PO seems to have used gobs of Bondo to attach the hood metal to the hood support.

iirc, one pig i pulled apart had some padding, kind of like carpet padding between the roof support and the roof skin...for the others i parted, i couldn't tell you for sure.

On the roof, there are no direct braces for the sheetmetal. What you are seeing are the 2 headliner supports that have padding that ride against the roof.

The hood channel has some type of rubberized adhesive, maybe factory seam sealer, that's supposed to bond the channel to the hood. It gets old, chips off, & loses it's ability to perform. I would not bother welding it, just clean off remains & reapply another type of adhesive.

I did this exact thing to my hood and used urethane adhesive in tubes. That way you can really control it and it looks really good afterwards. I now dont hear anything going down the road and my hood shuts with a dull whack... kinda nice.

Thought I'd resurrect this semi-old thread.

I'm giving thoughts to replacing my hood with a later hood (76+) If I do this, is there no reason to weld the hood sheetmetal to the ribs? I know that the welding will kill the paint... but if the hood gets replaced, it will get repainted.

the newer hoods have the same issues, also the crack on the pass side of the hood.

Any brand name on that? And how much cleaning did you do?

Brand name is Sika. I took a wire brush to the support and the hood before i started and then wiped down with acetone. Then I just cut the tip to the my liking and went to town. Turned out great and no real cleanup afterwards. I had one spot I didn't like and I trimmed it after the urethane was dry. Then I painted over it. Worked really well.
